Red Dragons Eliminate Cardinals in Extras to Advance in SUNYAC Tournament

Nagel Hits Game-Winning Double in Eighth to Stay Alive in Conference Playoffs

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. -- The SUNY Oneonta softball team moved on in the SUNYAC tournament after they defeated Plattsburgh State, 3-2, in eight innings of an elimination game, Thursday afternoon. Senior Marissa Nagel (Averill Park/Averill Park) hit the go-ahead run in with a double while sophomore Angelina Scalere (Ardsley/Ardsley) picked up the win and recorded four of her nine outs via strike out. The Red Dragons fell to one-seeded New Paltz in the first game of the double elimination tournament, 3-1, and after their victory over the Cardinals, they will face the loser of the matchup between Cortland and Geneseo tomorrow at 3 pm.

Game One: Oneonta 1, New Paltz 3
It was a pitching duel against the Hawks as both teams recorded only one hit through the first three innings of play.

Oneonta got on the board in the fourth after three straight singles. Junior Delaney Haley (Levittown/Division Avenue) started the inning off with a base hit to left field, advanced to second off sophomore Julia Serena's (White Plains/Valhalla) single to center, then crossed home when graduate student Megan Palmatier (Bainbridge/Bainbridge-Guilford) hit one to left. The Red Dragons loaded the bases with another single from junior Victoria Hussey (Nesconset/Smithtown East), but the inning ended when Serena attempted to tag third off a fly out and got tagged out at home.

New Paltz tied it in the fifth off a passed ball then took the lead in the sixth off a two-run single from Jaycee Filancia.

Down to their final out, sophomore Ayisa Oliver got hit by a pitch to get the tying run at the plate, but the game ended with a ground out.

Haley finished the game 3-for-3 with a stolen base and a run scored. Palmatier, Serena, and Hussey all went 1-for-3.

Junior Marissa Dionisio (Sayville/Sayville) (6-10) was tagged with the loss after pitching the complete game, striking out two, and allowing three runs off seven hits.

Lindsay Roman (17-2) got the win after pitching the whole game, striking out three and allowing one run off six hits.

Game Two: Oneonta 3, Plattsburgh 2 – 8 Innings
Plattsburgh took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning off a sacrifice fly by Kristina Maggiacomo.

In the fifth inning, Oneonta gave themselves a 2-1 edge. Freshman Abigail Silliman (Rensselear, N.Y./Columbia) reached first with a one-out single to right field. Senior Adriana Fiori (Newtown, CT/Brookfield) then reached first on an error by the third baseman which allowed Silliman to advance to third. After Fiori moved to second, senior Kayla Young (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Charles W. Baker) brought both runners in with a double to center.

The Cardinals tied it in the bottom half of the fifth with an RBI-single from Maggiacomo.

Plattsburgh had a chance to pull ahead in the sixth and seventh innings but came up empty-handed. Runners were on first and second with two outs in the sixth, however Scalere got out of the inning with a strike out. In the seventh, the Cardinals had runners on the corners with one out, until Hussey caught a hard-hit line drive at third and was able to touch the base for the inning-ending double play, sending the game into extras.

After two quick outs, Palmatier reached second with a double to left field to keep the inning alive for the Red Dragons. Next up was Nagel, who hit a double down the left field line and scored Palmatier to make it 3-2.

The tying run reached first on a two-out walk for Plattsburgh, but Scalere closed out the game with a strikeout against Claire Palmer.

Palmatier finished 3-for-4 with two doubles and scored a run. Young went 1-for-1 with her two-RBI double and Nagel went 1-for-3.

Scalere (4-2) got the win after pitching the final 3.0 innings, striking out four and allowing one hit. Sophomore Cadence Brennan (Niskayuna/Niskayuna) started the first 3.0 innings, struck out one and allowed one run off five hits. Dionisio pitched for 2.0 innings, struck out one and allowed a run off four hits.

Julia Golino (10-3) pitched the full game for the Cardinals, struck out four and allowed three runs, two earned off seven hits.
