Softball Sweeps Golden Eagles in Conference Opener; Curran-Headley Records 400th Career Win

ONEONTA, N.Y. -- The SUNY Oneonta softball team swept their conference opening doubleheader against Brockport in two five-inning mercy-rule games, 10-2 and 9-1, Friday afternoon. The game one victory was head coach Sara Curran-Headley's 400th career win as a collegiate coach. Halfway through her 10th season with the Red Dragons, Curran-Headey currently has a 187-128-2 record. The doubleheader sweep improved the team to 8-11-1 on the season and 2-0 in the SUNYAC, while the Golden Eagles dropped to 3-11 overall and 0-2 in the conference.

Sophomore Julia Serena (White Plains/Valhalla) finished the day 5-for-7 with five RBI and scored five runs, and junior Delaney Haley (Levittown/Division Avenue) was a perfect 4-for-4 and scored five times. Graduate student Megan Palmatier (Bainbridge/Bainbridge-Guilford) hit her 10th career home run as she went 3-for-4 with five RBI and senior Marissa Nagel (Averill Park/Averill Park) finished 3-for-7 with two RBI and scored twice.

Game One: Oneonta 10, Brockport 2 (5 innings)
The Red Dragons gained a commanding five-run lead after the first inning. Nagel and Haley started the run with a couple singles. Nagel scored off a throwing error from the Golden Eagles pitcher, Roseland Stroh, which allowed Serena to reach base safely. Haley made it home off a passed ball during junior Victoria Hussey's (Nesconset/Smithtown East) at-bat that later turned into a walk. Palmatier brought in Serena and Hussey with a triple to center field before she tacked on the last run of the first on a double steal attempt with senior Adraina Fiori.

Brockport got a couple runs back in the second off a defensive error and a single from Olivia Hayden. Oneonta made it a 6-2 game in the bottom of the second when Serena singled through the right side as Haley crossed home.

In the fourth inning, Serena brought in Haley again with an infield single and came home with two outs off Palmatier's second triple of the game.

The Red Dragons capped off the game with two more runs in the fifth. Nagel hit a double to left field that scored junior Gianna Cancelleri (Naples, FL/Washingtonville (NY)) and Serena hit a double to right center for Nagel to score the final run.

Junior Marissa Dionisio (Sayville/Sayville) (2-5) received the win after pitching the complete game, striking out seven and allowing two unearned runs off two hits.

Stroh (1-2) was tagged with the loss after pitching a complete game for Brockport, pitching 4.2+ innings, striking out one, allowing 10 runs, seven earned, off 11 hits.

Game Two: Oneonta 9, Brockport 1 (5 innings)
Oneonta jumped out to another early lead in the first of game two with a sacrifice fly from Hussey and a two-run home run from Palmatier.

The Red Dragons tallied another four runs in the second inning to increase their lead, 7-0. Fiori tallied the first run off a double steal attempt with junior Aysia Oliver (Brentwood/Brentwood). Cancelleri then brought in Oliver with a double to left field. After Haley walked, Serena finished the rally with a double to center that knocked in both Cancelleri and Haley.

The lead increased to nine in the third when Fiori scored on a passed ball and Nagel singled up the middle that scored Oliver.

The Golden Eagles got their lone run in the fifth off a sacrifice fly from Hannah Jacobs.

Sophomore Cadence Brennan (Niskayuna/Niskayuna) (2-3) received the win after pitching the complete game, striking out one and allowing one run off three hits.

Fiona Gibiser (2-5) pitched the complete game for Brockport, allowing nine runs, eight earned, off eight hits.

The Red Dragons continue SUNYAC play on Saturday when they host Geneseo in a doubleheader starting at 1 pm.
