TROY, N.Y. -- The SUNY Oneonta softball team split their non-conference road doubleheader against RPI, Monday afternoon. The Engineers took game one in walk-off style, 9-8, while the Red Dragons won game two, 5-4, in six innings of play, scoring four runs in the sixth inning. Oneonta is now 6-11-1 on the season and RPI is 11-5 overall. Â
Game One – Oneonta 8, RPI 9
Senior
Marissa Nagel (Averill Park/Averill Park) and junior
Delaney Haley (Levittown/Division Avenue) opened the game with a double and a bunt, respectively, to get runners on the corners with no outs. Both runners came home on a fielding error by the Engineer's left fielder to give the Red Dragons a 2-0 lead. Gabby Comeau tied the game with a two-RBI double to left center in the bottom half of the inning.
Nagel hit an RBI-single to right field that scored junior
Sara Cartier (Cicero/Cicero-North Syracuse) the next inning, but RPI tallied three in the bottom of the second off a couple singles to go ahead 5-3. Â
The Red Dragons got one back in the top of the third off a sacrifice fly by junior
Gianna Cancelleri (Naples, FL/Washingtonville (NY)), however the Engineers added two more in the inning for a three-run lead.
In the top of the fifth, Cartier singled to center field and brought in senior
Adriana Fiori (Newtown, CT/Brookfield), then in the sixth, Oneonta scored three runs to go up 8-7. After sophomore
Julia Serena (White Plains/Valhalla) walked and junior
Victoria Hussey (Nesconset/Smithtown East) hit an infield single, graduate student
Megan Palmatier (Bainbridge/Bainbridge-Guilford) singled down the left field line for Serena to cross home. Senior
Kayla Young (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Charles W. Baker) brought Hussey and Palmatier home with a double to right field for the one-run advantage.
RPI tied it in the sixth after Erin Askins stole home. The Engineers got the game-winning run in the seventh after Charli Smith reached on a fielding error, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, then scored on a single by Maddy Brooks. Â
Cartier, Haley, Hussey, and Nagel all recorded two hits and scored a run in the game, Cartier and Nagel had an RBI. Young went 1-for-3 with two RBI.
Freshman
Anna Torgersen (Chester, NJ/Mendham) (2-3) was tabbed with the loss after she pitched the final 2.1 innings, struck out two and allowed two runs, one earned, off three hits. Junior
Marissa Dionisio (Sayville/Sayville) started the game and pitched 4.0+ innings, struck out four, and allowed seven runs, three earned, off eight hits. Â
Erike Holowka (4-1) got the win after she pitched the final 1.2 innings, struck out one, and allowed two hits. Alexis Cooke started the game for the Engineers, allowed eight runs, five earned off 10 hits, and struck out six. Â
Game Two – Oneonta 5, RPI 3 (6 innings – Darkness)
The nightcap started as a pitching battle until Callista Adorno hit a two-out solo home run in the bottom of the fourth. The Red Dragons got the run back in the fifth inning after Fiori reached based off a single and later scored on a fielder's choice. Â
Oneonta put together a four-run sixth inning to go ahead 5-1. Serena started the run with a double and came home off a fielding error by the first baseman, which allowed Palmatier to reach base safely and advance to second. Sophomore
Sophia Mangone (Ardsley/Ardsley) doubled to right center, allowing Palmatier to cross home. Mangone advanced to third off a successful bunt from Fiori then scored on a double steal attempt, moving Fiori to second. Fiori tallied the final Red Dragon run off Cartier's single to center field. Â
RPI cut the deficit to two in the sixth inning off Catherine Worthington's triple and Adorno's sacrifice fly, however the game was called due to darkness when it was heading into the bottom of the seventh. Â
Fiori and Palmatier each went 2-for-3 in the game, Fiori scored twice while Palmatier scored once. Cancelleri, Cartier, and Mangone all recorded an RBI. Â
Sophomore
Cadence Brennan (Niskayuna/Niskayuna) (1-3) earned the win after she pitched 5.0 innings, struck out three, and allowed three runs, two earned, off five hits. Sophomore
Angelina Scalere (Ardsley/Ardsley) (2) got the save after she pitched the final inning. Â
Brooke Sroczinski (2-1) received the loss after she allowed four unearned runs off seven hits and struck out five. Â
The Red Dragons are back in action Friday for the start of SUNYAC play when they host Brockport at 3 pm.Â
