ONEONTA, N.Y. -Â Cobleskill out hit Oneonta 9-6, but the Red Dragons were able to edge the Fighting Tigers 2-0 in non-conference action on Monday afternoon. Oneonta records its second straight shutout and moves to 17-4, while Cobleskill falls to 4-10.Â
After Cobleskill got runners on second and third, Chris Champlin grounded out to senior Jake Barrett (Hauppauge, NY/St. Anthony's) at third to end the first inning. Oneonta went down two quick outs before Barrett singled to right field, but the following batter struck out to keep it 0-0.
Neither side could find any momentum, and in the top of the fourth, freshman Martin Thorsland (Maryland, NY/Milford Central) pitched for the Red Dragons. A double play brought the Fighting Tigers to two outs, and Thorlsand then struck out a batter to end the top half of the inning. Oneonta loaded the bases, and fifth-year Joe Ottaviano (Nanuet, NY/Albertus Magnus) used a single up the middle to bring sophomore Anthony Foglia (Somers, NY/North Salem) home for the opening run.Â
The Dragons added another score in the bottom of the fifth. Freshman Matt Sandoval (West Islip, NY/West Islip Senior) singled and reached second base following a Josh Gilkey (Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse Minor) sacrifice bunt. He advanced again when the next batter grounded out and was singled home by Barrett to make it 2-0.Â
Cobleskill remained dangerous, and Chris Champlin singled to start the sixth inning. Frank Leger then lined out to Thorsland, and Stephen Tejada grounded out into a double play from Barrett at third to second baseman Nick Jacoby (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown) and first baseman Foglia to keep the lead.
Senior Logan Carriero (Somers, NY/Somers) pitched the ninth inning and struck out one batter while giving up just one hit to earn the save.Â
Barrett went 2-for-3 with one RBI and a walk, while Ottaviano was 2-for-4 with an RBI.Â
Thorsland (3-0) pitched 2.0 innings with one strikeout. Graduate Derek Shea (West Kingston, RI/Wells College) and Carriero each went 1.0 inning, and both had one strikeout.Â
Cobleskill's Logan Firment went 4-for-4, while Leger was 2-for-4.Â
Andrew Jarkow (1-2) went 5.0 innings with five strikeouts.
