OSWEGO, N.Y. -Â After falling 5-4 in the opening game, the Oneonta baseball team returned to win 12-8 in the second game to split Friday's doubleheader against Oswego. With the win, the Red Dragons have clinched a spot in the SUNYAC tournament. Additionally, senior Jake Barrett (Hauppauge, NY/St. Anthony's) recorded the 100th hit of his career after the day.Â
The Red Dragons (23-11, 9-5 SUNYAC) took the lead in the top of the second inning. Liam Kaseta (Somers, NY/Somers) singled and reached second base when junior Gregory Bandura (Pine Bush, NY/Pine Bush) walked. A Lakers' error allowed Bandura and Kaseta to score, and then Joe Ottaviano (Nanuet, NY/Albertus Magnus) reached home on a first baseman error to put Oneonta up 3-0.Â
Oswego (18-16, 9-5) got on the board in the bottom of the third when Brian Brezosky singled in a run to cut the lead to 3-1.Â
Three scoreless innings followed until the bottom of the seventh. Oswego's CJ McCarthy led off with a double and reached home after an Anthony Barone single. The Lakers added another run on a passed ball to tie 3-3.Â
Oswego took the lead in the eighth inning when Dreason and Barone hit RBI singles. Oneonta had two quick outs in the ninth before Barrett scored on an Ottaviano single through the right side to make it 5-4. The Red Dragons struck out to give the Lakers to win.
Barrett hit 2-for-4 with one run, while Ottaviano had one hit, one run, and three RBI.Â
McCarthy finished 2-for-4 with two runs, and Dreason was 2-for-3 with two runs and one RBI.
Senior Sean Liquori (Thiells, NY/North Rockland) pitched 7.0 innings with three strikeouts.Â
Oswego's Kieran Finnegan went 8.0 innings with seven strikeouts.Â
Oneonta went 1-2-3 to start the first inning of game two. The Lakers scored on a Red Dragons' error to take an early 1-0 lead. Oneonta could not rally much offense in the second inning but had some solid pitching to prevent Oswego from scoring again, with Junior Kevin Rooney striking out two batters in the bottom of the frame.Â
Senior Nate Guillen (Haverstraw, NY/North Rockland) singled at the top of the third and then stole second. He scored on an Oswego third-baseman error to tie 1-1. Barrett hit a triple which brought sophomore Josh Gilkey (Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse Minor) home.Â
Pitching on both sides remained strong until the fifth inning when Barrett singled in Gilkey to make it 3-1. Oswego poured five runs to go up 6-3 in the bottom of the fifth.
Oneonta responded in the sixth by tallying six runs on four hits. The Red Dragons loaded the bases, and a pitch hit Bandura to force a run in. Ottaviano scored on a Lakers' error, and Oneonta tied when sophomore Bradley Turner (Stone Ridge, NY/Rondout Valley) singled down the right field line to allow Guillen to score. Kaseta hit a two-RBI single to give the Red Dragons an 8-6 lead, and then Ottaviano added one more before the end of the inning.Â
Junior Tom Roefaro (Utica, NY/Notre Dame) struck out two Lakers to cap off a 1-2-3 sixth inning. Barrett doubled in the seventh for his 100th career hit, and Gilkey scored to push the lead to 10-6. Sophomore Anthony Foglia (Somers, NY/North Salem) followed with a sacrifice fly to tack on another run and give the Red Dragons a five-score lead.Â
Oswego grabbed another run in the seventh, but Oneonta answered when Liquori ran home on a Bandura single in the eighth.Â
Oswego remained within striking distance until the ninth inning, but junior Michael Sadowski (Queens, NY/Queens Metropolitan) struck out the final batter to end the game 12-8.Â
Barrett went 3-for-6 with three RBI, and Foglia added three hits on one RBI.Â
Roefaro (4-1) went 2.1 innings with five strikeouts and no hits. Sadowski picks up the save with one strikeout.Â
Oneonta wraps up the Oswego series on Sat. Apr. 29 at noon.
