OSWEGO, N.Y. -Â After a 1-1 start to the three-game series, the Oneonta baseball team took game three with an 11-9 win during Saturday's SUNYAC contest against Oswego. Additionally, this is the first time the Red Dragons have beaten Oswego in a series since their 2012 season.
The lead was 1-0 after the first inning after Josh Gilkey (Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse Minor) was hit by a pitch advancing to first. Bradley Turner's (Stone Ridge, NY/Rondout Valley) sacrifice bunt allowed Gilkey to then move to second. Shortly after, Jake Barrett (Hauppauge, NY/St. Anthony's) slipped one into right-center field for a double, bringing Gikey home.
After a scoreless second inning puts three more on the board in the top of the 3rd to bring the lead up to 4-0. Josh Gilkey (Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse Minor) started the inning with a double down the left-field line. Bradley Turner (Stone Ridge, NY/Rondout Valley) then singled to left field, bringing Gilkey home for the first score of the inning. After a pitch hit a passed ball and Barrett, the Red Dragons had runners on first and second. Anthony Foglia (Somers, NY/North Salem) hit a solid bunt advancing all runners and loading the bases for Oneonta. Oswego makes a double play at second and first base, but Jake Barret advanced to third, and Bradley Turner (Stone Ridge, NY/Rondout Valley) scored. Barret made it home for the third run of the inning after a wild pitch.
Joe Ottaviano (Nanuet, NY/Albertus Magnus) started with a single for the Red Dragons in the top of the fourth inning and then advanced to second on a passed ball. He then moved to third after a fly-out by Matt Sandoval (West Islip, NY/West Islip Senior). Nate Guillen's (Haverstraw, NY/North Rockland) sacrifice flies to the right field, bringing Ottaviano home for their first score of the inning. Gilkey makes it to first base after an error by the shortstop; he then advances to second base. Turner singles to right field and gets his second RBI of the game when Gilkey makes it home. This gave Oneonta a 6-0 lead after the top of the fourth inning.
Sam Allen walked in the bottom of the fourth inning, with bases loaded for Oswego, and CJ Mcarthy scored. Julian Drew grounded out to third base but got an RBI when Frank Levanti made it home. These two runs for Oswego shortened the Red Dragons Lead to 6-2.
With bases loaded in the top of the fifth, Sandoval reached first on an error by the center fielder, and Kaseta scored an unearned run for the Red Dragons. A wild pitch by Oswego allowed runners to advance, and Sean Liquori (Thiells, NY/North Rockland) scored. Oneonta took back their six-run lead ending the top of the fifth inning 8-2.
In the bottom of the 5th inning, the Lakers brought in three runs making the score 8-5. Jacob Levine and Owen Parliment walked at the start of the inning before Oneonta brought in Kyle Roper (Tappan, NY/Tappan Zee) to pitch. CJ McCarthy walked, giving Oswego an excellent opportunity with bases loaded and no outs. After a strikeout, Greg Carullo hit a sacrifice fly to right field, allowing Levine to score the first run of the inning for the Lakers. Tim Schinto was then walked, giving Oswego bases loaded once again. Julian Drew was hit by a pitch advancing all runners and bringing home Parliment for their second run of the inning. Still, Blake VanDreason walked with bases loaded, bringing McCarthy home for a score. The Red Dragons then brought in Kyle Rosenberger (Montgomery, NY/Valley Central) to finish out the inning.
After a scoreless top of the sixth inning for Oneonta, Logan Carriero (Somers, NY/Somers) came in to pitch in the bottom of the sixth inning. Jacob Levine singled to shortstop to start the inning for Oswego. Shortly after, Owen Parliment hit one out of the park for a two-run home run for the Lakers. This tightened the score to 8-7, giving Oneonta just a one-run lead going into the seventh inning.
Oneonta had another scoreless inning after the top of the seventh.
Oswego tied up the game 8-8 after punching in one run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Jacob Levine singled to third base with an RBI after Julian Drew made it home.
With the game tied at 8-8 going into the eighth inning, Turner walked before Barrett singled up the middle giving Oneonta runners on first and second. Foglia reached first after an error by the third baseman for Oswego. Foglia advanced to third on the play while Turner and Barrett scored, giving the Red Dragons a 2-run lead. Kaseta then singled to third base bringing Foglia home for another run for the Red Dragons. After the top of the eighth inning, Oneonta took back their lead with a score of 11-8.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, Oswego picked up one run after Greg Carullo hit a single down the right-field line with two runners on base. Carullo picked up the RBI when CJ McCarthy scored an unearned run. Oswego fights for more runs, but the Red Dragons hold them to just one at the end of the inning with a score of 11-9.
A scoreless ninth inning ends a hard-fought game, and Oneonta takes the win with a final score of 11-9.
Turner went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, and Barrett was 2-for-4 with one RBI.
Oneonta next travels to face Utica on Wed. May 3 at 4 p.m.
