POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -Â The Oneonta pitching staff held the Vassar Brewers scoreless on the way to a 2-0 victory on Sunday afternoon on Prentiss Field. Junior Devin Rooney (Port Jefferson Station, NY/Comsewogue) went 7.0 innings with four strikeouts, while junior Tom Roefaro (Utica, NY/Notre Dame) picked up the save by going 2.0 innings without giving up a hit.Â
The Red Dragons (16-4) batted first, with senior Liam Kaseta (Somers, NY/Somers) walking to reach first. A Vassar error led senior Jake Barrett (Hauppauge, NY/St. Anthony's) to first and advanced Kaseta. The Brewers (13-7) grounded out Barrett at second, and then another Vassr error by the center fielder allowed Kaseta to score.Â
Vassar went 1-2-3 in the bottom of the frame, and Rooney struck out one batter. Oneonta brought one more run in the second inning when junior Bradley Turner (Stone Ridge, NY/Rondout Valley) scored on a wild pitch to get the lead to 2-0.Â
It became a pitching battle afterward, but the Brewers looked dangerous in the top of the fifth when Christian Bakki led off with a single through the left side. Rooney struck out the following batter, but pinch runner Alex Warren stole second. A pop-out and then a line-out ended the inning.Â
In the sixth inning, fifth-year Joe Ottaviano (Nanuet, NY/Albertus Magnus) reached first on a bunt to third. He then got to second after a third baseman throwing error. Oneonta could not add to the lead with three straight outs to follow.Â
Vassar's Ricardo Reyna stole third in the seventh inning to get into scoring position, but Rooney stayed strong and struck out the final batter to keep the lead.Â
Roefaro relieved in the bottom of the eighth and gave Oneonta two 1-2-3 innings to even the weekend series.Â
Sophomores Josh Gilkey (Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse Minor) and Anthony Foglia (Somers, NY/North Salem) went 2-for-4, while senior Sean Liquori (Thiells, NY/North Rockland) and Turner had hits.Â
Rooney now moves to 4-0 with the win.
Vassar's Jaden Millstein, Andrew Kanellis, Reid Lapekas all had a single hit.Â
Oneonta returns home to host Cobleskill on Mon. Apr. 3 at 4 p.m. on Red Dragon Baseball Field.Â
