SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -Â Sophomore Anthony Foglia (Somers, NY/North Salem) hit a home run in the seventh inning, but it was not enough as the Oneonta baseball team fell 9-6 to Union on Tuesday evening. The Dutchmen move to 10-10, while the Red Dragons go to 19-6.
In the bottom of the third, Union led off with a ground out to the second base, and then sophomore Kyle Roper (Tappan, NY/Tappan Zee) struck out the following batter. Union's Kobe Mentzer hit an RBI single to right center to make it 1-0. Roper went on to strike out one more Dutchman to end the frame. The Dutchmen built upon its lead in the fourth inning with Sebastian Pike hitting an RBI single up the middle. Union put runners on second and third, and Dan Sheeran knocked a home run to left-center to make it 5-0.
Senior Sean Liquori (Thiells, NY/North Rockland) put Oneonta on the board in the fifth, but Union scored three more runs at the top of the sixth. After sophomore Josh Gilkey (Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse Minor) walked in the seventh, Foglia launched a home run into left field to cut the lead to 8-5. The Red Dragons loaded the bases, and junior Alex Wurster (Central Square, NY/Paul V. Moore) walked to force senior Liam Kaseta (Somers, NY/Somers) in for another run.
Union scored in the eighth when Mentzer brought Mentzer home on an RBI single.
Oneonta looked to make a comeback in the ninth when Liquori doubled down the left side, but a strike out and ground out put the Red Dragons to rest.
Foglia finished going 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBI. Matt Sandoval (West Islip, NY/West Islip Senior) went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Oneonta plays at Cortland next on Fri. Apr. 14 at 3 p.m.
