ONEONTA, N.Y. -- The SUNY Oneonta softball team combined for five home runs in their doubleheader sweep over Cobleskill, Saturday afternoon. The Red Dragons won game one in five innings, 11-1, then game two, 5-4, and improved to 5-10-1 on the season while the Fighting Tigers fell to 2-10 overall. Graduate student
Megan Palmatier (Bainbridge/Bainbridge-Guilford) finished the day 3-for-5 with three home runs and four RBI, and senior
Adriana Fiori (Newtown, CT/Brookfield) went 4-for-5 with three stolen bases and scored three runs, including the game-winning run in game two. Â
Game One – Oneonta 11, Cobleskill 1 (5 innings)Â
Oneonta broke out to a two-out rally in the first inning. Sophomore
Julia Serena (White Plains/Valhalla), junior
Victoria Hussey (Nesconset/Smithtown East), and Palmatier hit back-to-back-to-back home runs to put the Red Dragons up three. Junior
Sara Cartier (Cicero/Cicero-North Syracuse) continued the run with an infield single, later advancing to second on a wild pitch. Senior
Kayla Young (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Charles W. Baker) hit a hard grounder to shortstop and, on the throw, the shortstop sailed it over the first baseman allowing Cartier to score. Â
The Fighting Tigers got their lone run in the top of the second when Deanna Palmer singled to right field and scored Mikaela De La Cruz. Â
Junior
Gianna Cancelleri (Naples, FL/Washingtonville (NY)) got the run back in the bottom half of the second. After she doubled to right field, Cancelleri stole third then scored off an error by the shortstop. Â
Oneonta tacked on four more runs in the third. Palmatier led off the inning with a home run to left field. After the Red Dragons loaded the bases, Cancelleri brought in two with a double to the center field wall. Junior
Delaney Haley (Levittown/Division Avenue) tallied the final run of the inning off a passed ball. Â
The final two runs came in the bottom of the fourth. Cartier hit a triple that scored Palmatier before she scored on a wild pitch. Â
Junior
Marissa Dionisio (Sayville/Sayville) (1-5) pitched the complete game for Oneonta, allowed one run off two hits and struck out seven. Â
Cancelleri and Palmatier went 2-for-3 and had two RBI, while Hussey and Cartier went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Â
Marissa Wheeler (1-4) received the loss after pitching 3.0 innings, allowing nine runs, five earned, off nine hits and striking out six. Â
Game Two – Oneonta 5, Cobleskill 4Â
Cobleskill took an early lead game two with a couple of runs in the first. Wheeler hit an RBI-double down the left field line then was brought in by Alexis Miranda's single. Â
Oneonta got one of the runs back in the bottom of the third when senior
Marissa Nagel (Averill Park/Averill Park) hit a sacrifice fly that brought Fiori across home. Â
The Fighting Tigers scored two more in the fourth with back-to-back infield singles, but the Red Dragons got both back in the bottom half of the fourth. Palmatier hit a sacrifice fly that scored Hussey and freshman
Abigail Silliman (Rensselear, N.Y./Columbia) scored after a throw down attempt to third went over the third baseman's head, making it a 4-3 Cobleskill lead. Â
Palmatier tied the game up with a home run to left field in the bottom of the sixth. With two outs in the inning, Fiori singled up the middle and made it to second with an error from the center fielder. Fiori got 60 feet closer after stealing third and made it safely home after Haley reached first on an error by the first baseman. Â
Fiori went 3-for-3, stole two bases and scored two runs, while Young went 2-for-3 with a double in game two
Sophomore
Angelina Scalere (Ardsley/Ardsley) (2-0) got the win after pitching the final 3.1 innings, striking out five and allowing only two hits. Sophomore
Cadence Brennan (Niskayuna/Niskayuna) threw for 3.2 innings, allowed four runs off nine hits and struck out one. Â
Kimberly Olsen pitched 5.0 innings for the Fighting Tigers, allowed four runs, three earned, off eight hits. Jaydaci Chamberlain (0-3) received the loss after pitching 1.0 inning, allowing the final run, unearned, off one hit. Â
The Red Dragons are back in action on Monday on the road at RPI for a doubleheader starting at 3 pm.Â
