ONEONTA, N.Y.- The Oneonta baseball team's 13-game win streak ended Saturday afternoon after their 8-3 loss to Vassar. The Red Dragons move to 15-4 on the season, while Vassar becomes 13-6.
The Red Dragons started strong in the second inning, starting with Joe Ottaviano (Nanuet, NY/Albertus Magnus) hitting a solid double to left field. Up next to bat was Nate Guillen (Haverstraw, NY/North Rockland), who got one out of the park with two outs on the board. He had a substantial hit over the left field fence, which put two on the board for Oneonta, bringing the score to 2-1 after the second inning.
In the fifth inning, Alex Warren singled to left field and fought hard to steal second shortly after. Birch Herring-Jackson grounded out to first but was able to bump Warren to third base. Warren scored on a wild pitch before Kyle Roper (Tappan, NY/Tappan Zee) could close the inning.
In the bottom of the fifth, with bases loaded, Alex Wurster (Central Square, NY/Paul V. Moore) singled to right field, bringing Jake Barret home.
The score was 3-2 Oneonta at the end of the fifth.
Ty Murray picked up another run in the 6th inning with a solid double to left field. Not long after, Jaden Millstein singled to center field, bringing Murray home. These runs put Vassar ahead with a lead of 4-3 at the end of the 6th.
Vassar had a big 7th inning scoring four runs and holding Oneonta to none. Andrew Kanellis had a solid double down the left-field line, allowing Laderman to score. Silvera, Murray, and Reyna had RBIs that followed, giving Vassar an 8-3 lead.
Vassar could hold their 8-3 lead for the rest of the game.
Pat Kerrigan (2-1) was the winning pitcher for Vassar.
Oneonta travels to Vassar on Sun. Apr. 2 at noon.
