ONEONTA, N.Y. -Â Junior Alex Wurster (Central Square, NY/Paul V. Moore) hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth inning to bring two runs in along with a 4-3 victory over SUNY Poly on Wednesday afternoon. The Red Dragons have won seven consecutive games and move to 9-3 overall, while the Wildcats fall to 4-8.Â
SUNY Poly tacked on a run at the top of the third following a balk to bring the score 1-0. Oneonta evened the score at the bottom of the frame. Fifth-year Joe Ottaviano (Nanuet, NY/Albertus Magnus) led off with a double down the right-field line. He reached third following a sacrifice bunt from senior Nate Guillen (Haverstraw, NY/North Rockland) and picked up the score when freshman Nick Jacoby (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown) hit a sacrifice fly to right field.Â
The Wildcats retook the lead in the fourth. Zach Morrison hit a single and took second after Chris Martin hit a sacrifice bunt. Morrison picked up a run following a wild pitch to put SUNY Poly up 2-1.Â
SUNY Poly added another run in the seventh inning when Anthony Bonacci drove in a single and stole second. Barber singled to bring Bonacci home and make it 3-1.Â
Oneonta loaded the bases in the bottom half, and senior Jake Barrett (Hauppauge, NY/St. Anthony's) walked to drive in a run.Â
In the ninth, the Red Dragons loaded the bases again. Wurster came in to pinch hit and knocked a single to left field. The Wildcats' outfielder could not get to the ball in time as freshman Matt Sandoval (West Islip, NY/West Islip Senior), and sophomore Anthony Foglia (Somers, NY/North Salem) sprinted to home.Â
Oneonta had five batters with a hit, while Barrett went 3-of-4 with one run and one RBI.Â
Graduate student Derek Shea (West Kingston, RI/Wells College) earned the win after pitching 4.0 innings with three strikeouts.Â
Oneonta next plays Plattsburgh on Sun. Mar. 26 at 3 p.m. for their SUNYAC opener.Â
