ONEONTA, N.Y. -Â The Oneonta baseball team was graced with a sunny day and strong hitting as the Red Dragons picked up a 15-5 win over the Cazenovia Wildcats on Tuesday afternoon. Oneonta earns its sixth straight win and moves to 8-3 overall, while Cazenovia falls to 4-6.Â
After walking the first batter, senior Sean Liquori (Thiells, NY/North Rockland) struck out the following two Wildcats. The fourth batter then grounded out to shortstop. Sophomore Josh Gilkey (Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse Minor) led off with a single but was caught stealing. Another quick two outs made it 0-0 heading into the second.Â
At the top of the frame, Cazenovia's Will Winter singled in the first to give Xander Canfield the opening run as the Wildcats took an early 1-0 lead. Sophomore Kevin Roper struck out two before the Wildcats could add to their lead.
The Red Dragons took the lead in the bottom of the second. Senior Nate Guillen (Haverstraw, NY/North Rockland) singled to put Liquori on second, and then freshman Nick Jacoby (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown) hit a single to bring two runs home. Guillen scored after a Wildcats' error, and then a double from senior Jake Barrett (Hauppauge, NY/St. Anthony's) gave Oneonta three more runs. The Red Dragons loaded the bases but finished the inning ahead 5-1.
Cazenovia went 1-2-3 at the top of the third, and Oneonta used another decisive inning to build its lead to 9-1. Guillen singled, and then Jacoby and Gilkey were hit by pitches to load the bases. Senior Liam Kaseta (Somers, NY/Somers) walked to force Guillen home. Then Barrett hit a single to center field to add two more runs. Kaseta picked up the fourth run on an Anthony Foglia (Somers, NY/North Salem) sacrifice fly.Â
Neither side scored until the sixth inning when Oneonta's Cole Rockwell (Liverpool, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) tripled to right field. He scored after Anthony Bonilla grounded out to the second baseman to make it 10-1. The Red Dragons continued to build a comfortable advantage in the seventh with three more runs with hits from Justin Maler (Brookhaven, NY/Bellport), Franklin Padilla (Brooklyn, NY/LaSalle Academy), William Adkins (Oswego, NY/Oswego), and Tyler Widercrantz (Wading River, NY/Shoreham Wading River).Â
Cazenovia's Anthony Cretella singled to get a Wildcat on base, and then a single from Brendan Mair brought Cretella home. Jack Lees doubled to add two more runs for the Wildcats. Another hit made it 13-4. Oneonta answered with two runs in the bottom of the eighth, with Adkins singling in runs from Padilla and freshman Peter Houston (Centerport, NY/Harborfields). Cazenovia scored again in the ninth, but senior Logan Carriero (Somers, NY/Somers) struck out the final batter.
Barrett hit 3-for-4 with a double, five RBI, and a stolen base. Padilla went 2-for-2 with two runs and an RBI. Adkins, Guillen, and Rockwell each had two hits.Â
Seven different Oneonta pitchers got on the mound, and Roper (1-1) won with two strikeouts. Junior Michael Sadowski (Queens, NY/Queens Metropolitan) went 3.0 innings with a game-high four strikeouts.Â
