MARSHALL, TX – The SUNY Oneonta softball team finished their Texas Spring Break trip splitting their doubleheader against Mary Hardin-Baylor (UMHB), Friday afternoon. The Red Dragons (2-8) won game one, 5-4, on an RBI double by graduate student
Megan Palmatier (Bainbridge/Bainbridge-Guilford) before the Crusaders (11-6) took game two in six innings, 8-0. Senior
Marissa Nagel (Averill Park/Averill Park) went 4-for-7 with three RBI and two doubles in the doubleheader.
Game One: Oneonta 5, Mary Hardin-Baylor 4
UMHB struck first when they had runners on the corners with two-outs and double stole second and home. After taking the 1-0 lead, the Crusaders managed to load the bases, but junior
Marissa Dionisio (Sayville/Sayville) struck out Kyler Sanders to end the inning.
The Red Dragons got the offense rolling with three runs in the second. Senior
Kayla Young (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Charles W. Baker) led it off with a home run over the centerfield wall, tying the game at one. Oneonta got two more runners in scoring position after Palmatier walked and junior
Gianna Cancelleri (Naples, FL/Washingtonville (NY)) reached second off an error, advancing Palmatier to third. With two outs, Nagel brought in Palmatier and Cancelleri with a single up the middle, putting the Red Dragons ahead, 3-1.
In the fourth, UMHB tied it off a fielder's choice then an RBI single from Allyse Castillo. The next inning, Sanders gave the Crusaders the lead with a double to left field.
Oneonta knotted it up in the sixth when Nagel doubled to left field scoring junior
Sara Cartier (Cicero/Cicero-North Syracuse), who reached first on an infield single prior to Nagel's at-bat.
Sophomore
Julia Serena (White Plains/Valhalla) started the bottom of the seventh with a single up the middle. Young advanced Serena to second with a bunt which led to Palmatier hitting the game-winning RBI with a double to left center.
Nagel finished game one 3-for-4 with three RBI and Serena ended 2-for-4 and was the game-winning run. Young went 1-for-2 and worked a couple of walks with her home run.
Sophomore
Angelina Scalere (Ardsley/Ardsley) (1-0) received the win after pitching the final two innings, allowing only two hits. Dionisio started the game and pitched 5.0 innings, allowed four runs on five hits and struck out four.
Hannah McCallister (0-1) received the loss after pitching 4.1 innings, allowing two runs on four hits with three strikeouts.
Game Two: Mary Hardin-Baylor 8, Oneonta 0 (6 innings)
The Crusaders recorded three runs in the first of game two with an Izzy Gutierrez double and a two-run home run by Bryton Wright. UMHB added one more in the second off a single from Elissa Elliott then another two in the third on a sacrifice fly and a Castillo single. Wright hit her second home run of the game in the fourth then concluded the game with an RBI single in the sixth for the 8-0 final.
The Red Dragons had a couple moments where they had multiple runners on. In the second, Young and Palmatier both walked to get on with one out, but the Crusaders got out of the inning with a strikeout and a fly out. Junior
Victoria Hussey (Nesconset/Smithtown East) and Serena led off the fourth with back-to-back singles, however UMHB got out of that jam with a double play and a strikeout.
Freshman
Anna Torgersen (Chester, NJ/Mendham) (1-2) received the loss after pitching 1.2 innings, allowing four runs off seven hits. Sophomore
Cadence Brennan (Niskayuna/Niskayuna) pitched the final 4.1 innings, allowed four runs off eight hits and struck out one.
Grason Long (4-3) got the win after pitching a complete game, allowing five hits with seven strikeouts.
The Red Dragons are back in action on Wednesday when they travel to face RPI for a doubleheader starting at 3 pm.
