DAVENPORT, FL -Â A hot-hitting Oneonta baseball team earned its fifth consecutive win to move to 7-3 overall following a 14-7 victory over Beloit (4-4) on Friday morning. The Red Dragons totaled 14 hits, with 11 different batters registering a hit. on the final day of the RussMatt Florida InvitationalÂ
Beloit batted first, and Oneonta took them out 1-2-3. Junior Bradley Turner (Stone Ridge, NY/Rondout Valley) sent in a double to right field in the bottom of the first, but that proved all the Red Dragons could manage. The Buccaneers scored first in the second, with Brett Kiger leading off with a home run to left field. Junior pitcher Devin Rooney (Port Jefferson Station, NY/Comsewogue) settled in and struck out two batters to keep the score 1-0.Â
Senior Jake Barrett (Hauppauge, NY/St. Anthony's) led off with a single to right field and reached second after freshman Matt Sandoval (West Islip, NY/West Islip Senior) walked. Barrett took third following a sacrifice bunt from fifth-year Joe Ottaviano (Nanuet, NY/Albertus Magnus) and scored on a sacrifice fly from senior Nate Guillen (Haverstraw, NY/North Rockland).
The Red Dragons built their lead in the third inning when a Barrett single brought senior Liam Kaseta (Somers, NY/Somers) home. Sandoval singled, which allowed sophomore Anthony Foglia (Somers, NY/North Salem) to score, and Ottaviano singled to get a third run from Barrett in to make it 4-1.Â
Two scoreless innings followed, and Rooney struck out two Beloit batters in the top of the fifth. Oneonta brought four more runs in the bottom of the frame. Kaseta scored on a balk, and then a Guillen double gave Sandoval and Foglia runs. Guillen eventually reached home on a passed ball to give the Red Dragons an 8-1 lead. Oneonta tacked on two more runs in the sixth inning to go ahead by nine.Â
The Buccaneers attempted a comeback with four runs in the seventh inning. Singles from Garrison Ferone and Connor Vogel brought in two runs, and then Evan Zenger singled to add two more and put the score at 10-5.Â
Sandoval singled to bring in runs from Kaseta and Josh Gilkey (Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse Minor). Junior Alex Wurster (Central Square, NY/Paul V. Moore) knocked in pair of runs following a single to put the Red Dragons up 14-5. Beloit scored twice in the ninth but could not surmount a comeback.Â
Guillen finished going 3-for-4 with a double, four RBI, and a run. Barrett hit 2-for-2 with two runs and an RBI. Rooney (3-0) pitched 6.0 innings with six strikeouts.Â
Oneonta returns home from its Florida trip and hosts Cazenovia on Tue. Mar. 21 at 3:30 p.m.
