Oneonta Holds Off Clarkson, 9-8

LAKE MYRTLE, FL - The Red Dragons picked up its fourth straight win in Florida following a 9-8 victory over the Golden Knights on Thursday morning. Oneonta moves to 6-3 overall, while Clarkson falls to 1-8.

Oneonta went ahead 2-0 in the top of the second, with junior Gregory Bandura (Pine Bush, NY/Pine Bush) leading off with a single through the left side. Bandura stole second and reached third after Joe Ottaviano (Nanuet, NY/Albertus Magnus) singled to center field. Nate Guillen (Haverstraw, NY/North Rockland) followed with a triple to center field, which brought Ottaviano and Bandura in for a pair of runs.

At the bottom of the frame, pitcher Michael Sadowski (Queens, NY/Queens Metropolitan) struck out the opening two batters and then grounded out the third for a 1-2-3 inning. Oneonta brought five more runs in at the top of the third. Bandura singled to score Liam Kaseta (Somers, NY/Somers), and senior Sean Liquori (Thiells, NY/North Rockland) brought sophomore Anthony Foglia (Somers, NY/North Salem) home with another single. Ottaviano hit a single to bring in Bandura, and Liquori reached home on a passed ball to push the lead to 6-0. Freshman Nick Jacoby (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown) hit to the left side to add one more run before the end of the inning.

Clarkson mustered a rally during its turn to bat and cut the lead to 7-5. A double from Jake Millich brought home runs from CJ Cartier and Robert Fratangelo. Clarkson added another double from Aidan Kuefner to bring in two more runs, and a single from Kent Wilson made it a two-score game.

Neither side scored until the sixth inning when Kaseta tripled up the middle and scored on a third baseman error. Jacoby reached home to make it 9-5. The Golden Knights would bring the score within one following a double in the sixth inning, but Oneonta took Clarkson out 1-2-3 in the seventh and eighth frames.

Oneonta had four batters with multiple hits, with Ottaviano going 3-for-4 with two runs.

Sophomore Joshua Martin (Edmeston, NY/Edmeston) earned the win by going 3.1 innings with two strikeouts, while senior Logan Carriero (Somers, NY/Somers) picked up his second save of the season with two strikeouts.

The Red Dragons conclude the RussMatt Florida Invitational tomorrow against Beloit (WI) at 9 a.m.
