LAKE MYRTLE, FLÂ - Powered by balanced hitting and pitching, the Oneonta baseball team picked up 9-2 and 10-6 wins over Maine-Farmington on Wednesday afternoon at the RussMatt Invitational. The Red Dragons improve to 5-3 overall, while the Beavers fall to 2-6 on the season.Â
Game 1: Oneonta 9, Farmington, 2
Oneonta got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning. Sophomore Josh Gilkey (Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse Minor) and junior Bradley Turner (Stone Ridge, NY/Rondout Valley) walked and followed by stealing second and third. Gilkey scored on a wild pitch to make it 1-0. The Red Dragons built their lead in the second inning after two quick outs. Freshman Nick Jacoby (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown) walked and stole second, and Gilkey singled to bring him home. Gilkey stole second and third, and Turner reached second base on a walk and a steal. Senior Liam Kaseta (Somers, NY/Somers) walked to load the bases before sophomore Anthony Foglia (Somers, NY/North Salem) singled to bring runs from Turner and Gilkey.Â
Farmington picked up a hit in the third, but Oneonta pitcher Martin Thorsland (Maryland, NY/Milford Central) struck out the following batter to keep it 4-0. Freshman Brendan Duffy (Southold, NY/Southold Jr./Sr.) led off with a double, and the next two Red Dragons grounded out. A single from Jacoby gave Duffy a run as Oneonta went ahead by five.Â
The Red Dragons continued to roll in the fourth inning, adding four hits and four runs. Turner opened with a triple and then scored on a Kaseta single. The Beavers pitcher caught Kaseta stealing, and then Foglia singled to reach first. Gregory Bandura (Pine Bush, NY/Pine Bush) got to first on a Farmington error which brought Foglia to second base. The pair both stole bases to advance, and Foglia scored when Duffy grounded out to the second base. Bandura got home on a wild pitch, and Oneonta made it 9-0 following a run from Joe Ottaviano (Nanuet, NY/Albertus Magnus) off a Nate Guillen (Haverstraw, NY/North Rockland) single.Â
Neither side would score until the seventh inning, when the Beavers put two runs on the board. Sargent singled to bring two RBI in from Coombs and Subervi. The Beavers loaded the bases, but the final batter grounded out to end the game.Â
Foglia finished going 2-for-2 with one run and two RBI. Gilkey added two runs and an RBI.Â
Thorsland (1-0) pitched 5.0 innings with five strikeouts.Â
Game 2: Oneonta 10, Farmington, 6
The Beavers brought six runs in the first two innings to take a 6-0 lead to start game two. Oneonta cut the lead to four at the top of the third when Guillen walked, stole, and reached third on a Farmington error. Gilkey walked to load the bases, and a walk from Turner advanced Guillen home. Kaseta knocked in a single, giving Jacoby a run to bring the score to 6-2.Â
The Red Dragons would tie in the fourth with Duffy getting hit by a pitch. Freshman Matt Sandoval (West Islip, NY/West Islip Senior) walked to put runners on first and second, and then an Ottaviano single loaded the bases. Duffy scored on a pitching error, and Jacoby singled to bring Sandoval in to make it 6-4. Gilkey brought in two more runs following his single.
Oneonta took the lead in the fifth, with the Red Dragons tacking on three runs and three hits. A Sandoval double allowed Foglia to score and keep the lead for the remainder of the game. Oneonta added one more run in the sixth to complete the sweep.Â
Junior Tom Roefaro (Utica, NY/Notre Dame) pitched 5.1 innings and earned the win. He struck out three opposing batters.Â
Oneonta continues its Florida trip on Thur. Mar. 16 by playing Clarkson at 10 a.m.
