DAVENPORT, FL -Â The Oneonta baseball team shutout Farmingdale State 8-0 on Tuesday morning for their first win of the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational. The Red Dragons (3-3) poured on 11 hits with no errors, as seven batters registered a hit.Â
The Rams (4-5) were up to bat first and took a base following a single from Ryan Wasserman. Senior Sean Liquori (Thiells, NY/North Rockland) struck out a batter, and then two more outs kept it scoreless. Oneonta brought three runs in at the bottom of the first. Sophomore Josh Gilkey (Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse Minor) led off with a single down the right field line, and then Liam Kaseta (Somers, NY/Somers) tripled to make it 1-0. Senior Jake Barrett (Hauppauge, NY/St. Anthony's) tripled, which allowed Kaseta to reach home. Oneonta scored once more after Barrett scored on a wild pitch.Â
The Red Dragons added three more runs in the second inning. Joe Ottaviano (Nanuet, NY/Albertus Magnus) doubled to left center, and a single from senior Nate Guillen (Haverstraw, NY/North Rockland) made it 4-0. Guillen went on to steal home, and then freshman Nick Jacoby (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown) scored after Kaseta grounded out.Â
Farmingdale struggled to find any hits, and junior Devin Rooney (Port Jefferson Station, NY/Comsewogue) pitched in the top of the fourth. He struck out two batters to keep the score 6-0. Jacoby then scored in the bottom of the frame following a Kaseta double. Oneonta picked up its eighth run when Gregory Bandura (Pine Bush, NY/Pine Bush) scored on a balk.Â
Liquori finished with 3.0 innings and two strikeouts, while Rooney (2-0) picked up the win with three strikeouts and one hit. Senior Logan Carriero (Somers, NY/Somers) earned the save and struck out three batters.
Oneonta continues the RussMatt Central Florida Invite on Wed. Mar. 15 with a doubleheader against UMaine-Farmington at 2:45 p.m.
