Red Dragons Hold off Late Pride Push for 16-15 Win

GREENSBORO, NC – The SUNY Oneonta men's lacrosse team defeated Greensboro in a tough contest, 16-15, Sunday afternoon. Freshman Jamie O'Neil (Bath, N.Y./Haverling) had six goals and two assists, and senior Matthew Krieg (Port Jefferson Station/Comsewogue) had four goals as the Red Dragons improved to 3-2 on the season and the Pride dropped to 2-5.

Greensboro jumped out to a 2-0 lead until O'Neil and Krieg tied it at 3:02. Pride's Will Beyer scored a pair in the final couple minutes of the first for a 4-2 lead.

The Red Dragons went on the attack and scored four straight in the early portion of the second quarter. At 12:45, Krieg received the ball near the side of the attack zone, passed it up to senior Connor Gallagher (Montrose/Hendrick Hudson), who dumped it back to Krieg for the score. During Oneonta's next possession, Gallagher found senior Sam Haita (Stephentown/La Salle Institute) for the goal, and O'Neil capped off the run with an assist to Krieg before he found the net on a man-up opportunity. Greensboro knotted the game up with a couple shots from Austin Abourjilie at 4:55, but Oneonta created separation again before the end of the half by scoring three goals within a 50 second span. At 2:41, Gallagher fired in the first before finding the net again 40 seconds later. Junior Stephen Sommo (Floral Park/Floral Park) then won the ensuing faceoff, collected the groundball and got it to senior Jake Dominikoski (Niskayuna/Niskayuna) who found O'Neil for a 9-6 lead heading into the half.

The offensive stretch continued for Oneonta at the start of the third quarter with scores from O'Neil and Krieg, extending their lead to five at 12:29. Greensboro began to cut the deficit and got to within two at 8:18 until O'Neil netted his fifth of the game and freshman Daniel Macchiarella (Guilderland, N.Y./Guilderland) scored his first collegiate goal, putting the Red Dragons up four at 4:42. The Pride closed out the quarter with a pair of goals from Beyer and Seth Mandryk to cut the margin back to two.

O'Neil made it 14-11 with 11:25 to play but Abourjilie tied it up with two goals and an assist to Mandryk at 7:05. The Red Dragons regained the lead after Haita scored his second of the game then made it a two-goal game after junior Stephen Sommo (Floral Park/Floral Park) scored his first collegiate goal with 4:13 remaining. Mandryk scored on a man-up advantage for the Pride at 3:35, however they could not find the net again and the Red Dragons came out with a win.

Gallagher finished with two goals and two assists, and Haita had a pair of goals. Macchiarella had one goal and one assist.

Junior Harrison Boukas (North Massapequa/Plainegde) finished with nine saves and Sommo won 12 faceoffs and collected six ground balls.
