MARSHALL, TX. -- The SUNY Oneonta softball team dropped a doubleheader to St. John Fisher in their season opener in Marshall, Texas, Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals took game one, 5-1, before they won game two in five innings, 9-0, improving to 7-3 on the season. Â
Game 1: St. John Fisher 5, Oneonta 1Â
The Cardinals managed to score three runs in the first inning off a series of walks and hit-by-pitches. In the top of the third, they had one more runner cross home on an infield groundout. Â
The Red Dragons got two runners on in the bottom half of the fourth with a pair of singles from junior
Gianna Cancelleri (Naples, FL/Washingtonville (NY)) and senior
Marissa Nagel (Averill Park/Averill Park). That set up junior
Victoria Hussey (Nesconset/Smithtown East) to knock in Cancelleri with a single up the middle. Oneonta couldn't close the gap any further and St. John Fisher earned the final run in the fifth off a Kelly Cournoyer single. Â
Cancelleri and Nagel each went 2-for-3 while Hussey went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Â
Senior
Marissa Dionisio (Sayville/Sayville) (0-1) received the loss after pitching four innings, striking out three, and allowing five runs off two hits and seven walks. Sophomore
Cadence Brennan (Niskayuna/Niskayuna) pitched the final three innings, allowing five hits. Â
Jess Patterson (3-1) pitched the complete game, struck out nine and allowed one run off five hits for St. John Fisher.
Game 2: St. John Fisher 9, Oneonta 0 (5 innings)
The Cardinals put up a pair in the first inning of game two off a wild pitch and an Allie Klonowski single. St. John Fisher pulled away with a seven-run second inning. After loading the bases with one out, Amalia DeMartino brought one in with a single and Ainsley Evanetski worked a walk to extend the lead to four. Klonowski hit a two-run double before she and Evanetski scored on a throwing error. Tori LoPresto hit the final run in with a single up the middle, putting the Cardinals up nine. Â
The Red Dragons loaded the bases with one out in the fourth with a single to left field by graduate student
Megan Palmatier (Bainbridge/Bainbridge-Guilford) and a couple walks by sophomore
Julia Serena (White Plains/Valhalla) and Hussey but were all left stranded. Â
Palmatier, Serena, and juniors
Delaney Haley (Levittown/Division Avenue) and
Sarah Paige (Fort Ann, N.Y./Fort Ann Central) all recorded a hit in the second game. Â
Freshman
Anna Torgersen (Chester, NJ/Mendham) (0-1) received the loss after pitching 1.2 innings, striking out two and allowing six earned runs off seven hits and three walks. Sophomore
