OSWEGO, N.Y. -- Senior
Meg Nardelli (Wappingers Falls/Roy C. Ketcham) went 5-for-9 from beyond the arc, posting a career-high 21 points, in the SUNY Oneonta women's basketball team's 62-48 road victory over Oswego State, Saturday afternoon. The Red Dragons improved to 15-6 overall and 10-4 in the SUNYAC while the Lakers moved to 12-11 on the season and 5-10 in the conference. Â
Graduate student
Clara Culeton (Oswego/Oswego) and senior
Olivia Dobrovosky (Skaneateles/Skaneateles) both scored six points in the first quarter. After Logan Castiglione hit a three-pointer to put Oswego State up four with two minutes to play, Culeton and Dobrovosky each made a layup, heading into the second quarter tied at 13. Â
Neither team could create much separation from the other in the second. Nardelli made a pair at the line to put the Red Dragons up 19-18 at 7:24, then the Lakers scored six straight for a five-point lead. Dobrovosky brought it to within one shortly after with a couple buckets, but Chastin Giles recorded the game's next seven points to give Oswego State a 31-23 advantage with 45 seconds left in the half. Â
Nardelli closed out the half with a triple to bring Oneonta within five, then came out of the locker room and scored the Red Dragons next 11 points, regaining their lead with 3:50 left in the third. Momentum started to go in Oneonta's favor as Dobrovosky continued the run with a cross paint layup before Nardelli hit a midrange jumper to make it 41-36 at 2:38. A midrange jumper from sophomore
Amanda Zuntag (Staten Island/Notre Dame Academy) and a three-pointer from sophomore
Nadia Brown (Troy/Troy) kept the Red Dragons ahead, 46-41, heading into the final quarter.
Junior
Jenna Harclerode (Sayville/Sayville) drove in the paint for two and then knocked down a three to put Oneonta up 10 with 4:52 to play. A minute later, Harclerode passed to Zuntag for the easy lay in to make it a 12-point game. The Lakers cut the lead to single digits when Castiglione made a three-pointer with less than two minutes to play, but Nardelli used the glass from beyond the arc to get the points back. Giavanna White-Principio made a deep two, but it was too late for Oswego State as Zuntag and Brown capped off the game for the final 62-48.
Dobrovosky finished with 12 points and seven rebounds and Culeton recorded 10 points and nine boards. Brown and Zuntag each had seven points while Brown totaled four assists and Zuntag tallied four rebounds. Along with her 21 points, Nardelli grabbed six rebounds.
