BUFFALO, N.Y. -Â Fifth-year Joie Tortorice (Melville, NY/Walt Whitman) scored the first Red Dragons goal as the Oneonta women's soccer team dropped a 5-3 decision to Buffalo State on Saturday morning. The Red Dragons finish the season 5-6-3 overall with a 2-6-1 mark in SUNYAC play, while the Bengals move to 6-6-4 and 1-5-3 in the conference.Â
Buffalo struck in the first minute, with Eve DiCarlo scoring off a Ryan Berman assist to make it 1-0. Oneonta responded in the 18th minute when Tortorice hit the back of the net from a Kaiden Ring (East Greenbush, NY/Columbia) pass at 18:20. The Bengals regained the lead in the 27th minute when Lindsay DePietro snuck a shot high right.Â
Buffalo State took a 3-1 lead before halftime when Emma Hesseltine netted a goal at 39:36.
In the 49th minute, Oneonta nearly cut into the Buffalo State lead when senior Leighann Perciballi (Northport, NY/Kings Park) struck the Bengals' crossbar. Faye Panagopoulos countered with an on-goal attempt at 53:02, but goalkeeper Olivia Forbes (Conesus, NY/Livonia) made the save. An Oneonta foul inside the box gave Bengals' Ryan Berman a penalty kick that she converted to push the lead to 4-1 at 53:54.
Freshman Keira Dashnow (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa) attempted to cut into the lead with a high-center shot that was turned aside by Bengals' goalkeeper Addy Williams in the 56th minute. Buffalo State did not let up, though, adding to its lead with another goal from Kaylee Vaentic at 57:26.Â
Oneonta was not entirely out of the fight, scoring two goals in the final two minutes of play. At 88:59, senior Brooke Matura (Northport, NY/Northport) scored off a Pericaballi assist. Then the Red Dragons scored again a minute later at 89:50. Dashnow scored her third goal off Katie Doherty's (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place) first-career assist.
