ONEONTA, N.Y. - The Oneonta women's soccer team scored two second-half goals to grab a 2-0 win over Fredonia on Saturday afternoon. The win helps the Red Dragons remain in playoff contention as they move to 5-4-3 overall and 2-4-1 in the SUNYAC. Meanwhile, the Blue Devils fall to 5-7-2 and 2-5-1 in the conference.
Despite the score, Fredonia controlled the midfield for the first half and outshot Oneonta 7-3. Sophomore goalkeeper Bryanna Meehan (Roxbury, NY/Roxbury Central) turned an early breakaway shot from Gabrielle Irwin 35 seconds in and then stopped another from Irwin at 4:44. Senior Leighann Perciballi (Northport, NY/Kings Park) responded with Oneonta's first shot at 13:42, but Blue Devils' goalie Abby Szymkowiak made the stop. Fredonia's Irwin struck the crossbar in the 30th, and then Grace Mackey recorded an on-net shot in the 32nd minute. The Red Dragons' defense held as Meehan made two more saves before halftime.Â
Fredonia continued the pressure in the second half, rattling off four shots on goal in the opening ten minutes. In the 64th minute, junior Kennady Amo (Cape Vincent, NY/Thousand Islands) rocketed a shot towards the Fredonia goal from 20 yards out that Szymkowiak knocked out of bounds. Oneonta broke the scoring drought when freshman Gianna Hanner (Ridge, NY/Longwood) kicked the corner to the center of the Blue Devils' goal. Junior Brooke Matura (Northport, NY/Northport) got a head on the ball and snuck it into the right corner to make it 1-0 at 68:20.
Senior Gianna Gritzmacher (Port Jefferson Station, NY/Comsewogue) fired two shots to keep the pressure on but could not connect. With time winding down, Fredonia moved its goalkeeper past the midfield. Matura snagged the ball and passed down the field to sophomore Kaiden Ring (East Greenbush, NY/Columbia), who scored on the open net.
Before the game, seniors Perciballi, Gritzmacher, and Jianna Champman were recognized for their four years of playing at Oneonta.
Fredonia outshot Oneonta 17-10 and held a 9-6 corner kick advantage. Meehan made eight saves in the shutout.Â
