A Quick Look
The SUNY Oneonta softball team was not able to stave off elimination this morning, falling to top seeded Geneseo in the SUNYAC softball tournament. The loss for the Red Dragons ends its season with an overall record of 22-13.
Â
The Inside Story
Geneseo (32-4) used a solo home run in the bottom of the first to grab the early lead.
Â
Oneonta tied the game in the top of the third inning with a single run of its own. Senior
Caroline Koch (New City/Clarkstown South) earned a free pass before stealing second. She advanced to third base on a
Gianna Cancelleri (Naples, FL/Washingtonville (NY)) single before scoring on a sacrifice fly by
Marissa Nagel (Averill Park/Averill Park).
Â
The Red Dragons struck for two runs in the top of the fourth to take a 3-1 lead. Back-to-back singles by
Megan Palmatier (Bainbridge/Bainbridge-Guilford) and
Victoria Hussey (Nesconset/Smithtown East) started the inning. The two were then sacrificed into scoring position by
Gianna DiGiovanni (Wantagh/Sacred Heart Academy). Palmatier scored on a ground out by
Aysia Oliver (Brentwood/Brentwood) allowing Hussey to get to third where she then scored on an RBI single by pinch-hitter
Sophia Mangone (Ardsley/Ardsley).
Â
The Knights didn't waste any time in knotting the score with a pair of runs in the home half of the fourth. Back-to-back doubles accounted for the first run and then an RBI single by Samantha Martz to bring home Audrey Minton from third.
Â
Geneseo put the game out of reach with six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, all with two outs. The big hit in the inning was a two-run single by Kaitlyn Schmitz that gave Geneseo a 7-3 lead. Schmitz drove in three for the game including her solo home run in the first inning.
Â
Hussey was the only Oneonta player with multiple hits, as she finished with a pair including a double.
