A Quick Look
The SUNY Oneonta baseball team split the doubleheader against Plattsburgh Saturday afternoon. The Red Dragons took game one 10-2 before falling in the nightcap 9-2. Â
The Inside Story
Game One – Oneonta 10, Plattsburgh 2
Leading 1-0, Oneonta put the game out of reach with an eight-run fourth inning. The Red Dragons took advantage of Cardinal mishaps, scoring the first run on an error and the second on a bases-loaded walk. Sophomore
Noah Frasca (St. James/St. John the Baptist) and senior
Patrick McGee (Mahopac/Mahopac) had back-to-back RBI-singles which extended the lead to five. Plattsburgh tried to stop the bleeding with a pitching change but came to no avail as junior
Liam Kaseta (Somers/Somers) hit an RBI-single to left. Freshman
Anthony Foglia (Somers/North Salem) then drove in McGee and Frasca with a single to right, and junior
Sean Liquori (Thiells/North Rockland) knocked in Kaseta with a double to right. Â
Alex Kornblau ended the shutout for Plattsburgh with an RBI-single to left in the fifth inning. Â
Both teams traded runs in the final inning as McGee doubled to left and scored Frasca for the Red Dragons, and Conner Gonzalski singled to left and brought in Mike Rasquin for the Cardinals. Â
Liquori finished 4-for-4 with three doubles and two RBI, while McGee went 3-for-5 with two RBI and scored twice. Sophomore
Michael Sadowski (Queens/Queens Metropolitan) earned the win after pitching a complete game, allowing two runs off seven hits, and struck out seven. Â
Game Two – Oneonta 2, Plattsburgh 9
The Cardinals grabbed an early lead after an error in the first inning, but the Red Dragons tied it in the third on a fielder's choice. Â
Plattsburgh took the game in the fourth with five runs. Rasquin and Kornblau had RBI-singles, and Gonzalski hit a sacrifice fly that scored Rasquin. Kyle Cremin drove in Kornblau with a single and later touched home on a passed ball. Â
The Cardinals scored two more in the sixth off RBI-singles from Cremin and Steve Messerschmitt, extending the lead 8-1.
In the top of the seventh, McGee scored on Kaseta's infield single.
Plattsburgh scored one more run in the eighth on another infield single. Â
McGee went 2-for-5 and scored both runs, and Kaseta finished 3-for-4. Freshman
Kyle Roper (Tappan/Tappan Zee) received the loss after pitching 3.1 innings allowing six runs, three earned, and struck out one. Senior Logan pitcher had 3.0 innings of relief pitching, allowed one run and struck out four. Sean Malamud pitched a complete game for the Cardinals, allowed seven hits, two runs, and struck out six.
