The SUNY Oneonta baseball team wrapped up their season with a win on the road against Utica 12-8 Tuesday afternoon. Usually designated for the mound, seniors
Michael Losak (Merrick/Sanford H. Calhoun),
Dean Langman (New Hartford/New Hartford), and
Benjamin Marsh (Halifax, Nova Scotia/Lockview) all recorded their first collegiate hit. Losak recorded a single in the second, Langman singled in the eighth, and Marsh had a two-run single in the ninth. Senior
Patrick McGee (Mahopac/Mahopac) also had an enjoyable day as he played in all nine positions while going 3-for-6. McGee went on the mound to close out the sixth inning, faced one batter and forced him to foul out. Â
The Inside Story
After McGee singled and drove in Losak, the Pioneers scored four runs in the third inning. Â
Senior
Michael Sabatine (Fairport/Fairport) hit a sacrifice fly in the fifth to cut the lead to two. Â
Sabatine hit another sacrifice fly in the seventh to bring Oneonta with one. Junior
Liam Kaseta (Somers/Somers) followed Sabatine with an RBI-single to tie the game. In the bottom half of the seventh, Dom Fasolo hit a sacrifice fly to regain Utica's lead. Â
Junior
Sean Liquori (Thiells/North Rockland) started the eighth with a walk and Langman and senior
Matthew McAllister (Vestal/Vestal) hit a pair of singles to load the bases. After a fly out, junior
Anthony Gonzalez (Carmel/Carmel) brought in Liquori with a single to right. Langman and McAllister crossed home later in the inning off an error by Utica's first baseman, giving the Red Dragons a 7-5 lead. Â
The Pioneers tied it up in the eighth after Dylan Sicilia's sacrifice fly drove in one and a wild pitch brought in the other. Â
Oneonta took the game after a five-run ninth inning. After leading off the inning with a single, Sabatine scored the first run on an error. The Red Dragons then got the bases loaded for junior
Nate Guillen (Haverstraw/North Rockland) to work a walk and scored Liquori, and Langman scored on a passed ball during senior
Benjamin Marsh's (Halifax, Nova Scotia/Lockview) at-bat. Later in his at-bat, Marsh brought in two with a single through the left side. Â
The Pioneers scored one more in the ninth off Matthew Kanyuk's double. Â
Just the Stats
Along with his three hits, McGee scored twice and drove in one. Sabatine went 1-for-2 with two RBI and scored once, while McAllister and Liquori scored twice.
Losak started the game and went 5.2 innings, allowed seven hits, three earned runs, and struck out five. Marsh received the win after pitching the final 1.1 innings, allowing one hit, one run, and struck out one.
The Red Dragons finished the season with a 13-23 record and a 5-13 record in the SUNYAC. Kaseta ended the season leading the team with a .379 batting average and 23 RBI. Losak led the team with four wins, 65.1 innings pitched, and 82 strikeouts.Â
