A Quick Look
Late runs in the game decided the outcome as the SUNY Oneonta baseball team was defeated by Oswego 8-6 in 10 innings, Saturday morning. Following the swept series, the Lakers head back home 19-6 overall and 9-0 in SUNYAC, while the Red Dragons fell to 7-20 overall and 1-10 in conference.
The Inside Story
Sophomore
Noah Frasca (St. James/St. John the Baptist) knocked in the first run of the game in the third inning, with a double to left. With Frasca on and two out, senior
Michael Sabatine (Fairport/Fairport) hit a deep groundball to shortstop, forcing the shortstop to overthrow the first baseman and scored Frasca. Sabatine made it to second on the misthrow, got to third on a wild pitch and crossed home on junior
Anthony Gonzalez's (Carmel/Carmel) single, giving Oneonta a 3-0 lead. Â
Ryan Weiss got Oswego on the board with a deep shot over left field fence in the top half of the fourth. The Lakers tallied one more run later that inning on a bases-loaded wild pitch. Â
Junior
Liam Kaseta (Somers/Somers) took one swing to get both runs back, hitting a two-run dinger in the bottom fifth.
In the top of the eighth, Weiss cut the deficit to two with his second home run of the game.
The Lakers were down to their last out before they put up a pair of runs to force extras. After a walk, Brett Myers came in to pitch run and made it to second on a passed ball. Leadoff hitter Paul Tammaro scored Myers with a blooper, and tied the game in the following at-bat after an outfield fielding error.
Following a pitching change for Oneonta, Oswego led the 10th inning off with two straight singles then cleared the bases with a three-run home run from Tishawn Featherstone. Sabatine got one back for the Red Dragons after he hit a single, made it to third on a failed pickoff attempt, and crossed home on a groundout. Â
Just the Stats
Sabatine and Gonzalez each went 2-for-5, and Gonzalez scored Sabatine twice. Kaseta went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run, and Frasca finished 1-for-2 with an RBI and run scored. Freshman
Kyle Roper (Tappan/Tappan Zee) pitched 9.0 innings, allowed five runs, four earned, off six hits, and struck out six. Â
