The Inside Story
Game 1 – Geneseo 10, Oneonta 8
Â
Today's first game came down to a late inning rally by the hosts after Oneonta jumped out to a 6-0 lead. Geneseo scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth including a bases-clearing double that put the Knights ahead to stay.
Â
Oneonta didn't waste any time in getting on the scoreboard with three runs in the first inning. The Red Dragons were aided by an error by the defense, which allowed senior
Caroline Koch (New City/Clarkstown South) and sophomore
Gianna Cancelleri (Naples, FL/Washingtonville (NY)) to reach base. After a ground out to third base, which moved the runners into scoring position, senior
Megan Palmatier (Bainbridge/Bainbridge-Guilford) brought them both home with a single to left field.
Â
Palmatier was able to get into scoring position and came in to score when freshman
Julia Serena (White Plains/Valhalla) hit an RBI single to center field.
Â
The Red Dragons increased its run total to six in the top of the third inning. The big hit in the inning came from sophomore catcher
Aysia Oliver (Brentwood/Brentwood) who hit singled to center field to drive in a pair of runs with two outs.
Â
Geneseo scored its first two runs in the bottom of the third inning before Oneonta bounced back in their half of the fourth with a pair to maintain its six-run lead.
Â
After back-to-back singles by Cancelleri and junior
Marissa Nagel (Averill Park/Averill Park), Palmatier tripled to left center field to bring them home.
Â
The Knights got one run back in the fifth before its five run sixth to take the win.
Â
Freshman
Cadence Brennan (Niskayuna/Niskayuna) was hit with the loss after starting, being relieved, and re-entering again in the sixth inning.
Â
Game 2 – Oneonta 4, Geneseo 2
Oneonta scored all the runs they would need in the nightcap in the third inning thanks to a pair of two-run home runs by Nagel and Serena. Serena's home run was her seventh of the season, which set a new single-season record for Oneonta.
Â
Oneonta collected 10 hits in game 2 including a 3-for-3 performance from the No. 9 hitter
Delaney Haley (Levittown/Division Avenue). Palmatier and Serena each had two hits.
Â
Sophomore
Marissa Dionisio (Sayville/Sayville) pushed her record to 5-1 with the victory in game 2. She allowed six hits, one earned run while striking out one. Rookie
Angelina Scalere (Ardsley/Ardsley) threw 2.1 innings of scoreless relief to pick up her third save of the season.
Â
