A Quick Look
The SUNY Oneonta baseball team split their SUNYAC doubleheader against Fredonia Monday afternoon. The Red Dragons (7-17, 1-7 SUNYAC) dropped the opener 5-4 before blanking the Devils (10-12, 1-7 SUNYAC) 17-0 in the nightcap.
The Inside Story
Game One – Oneonta 4, Fredonia 5
After trading runs in the first, the score remained tied at one until the sixth inning when junior
Sean Liquori (Thiells/North Rockland) hit a solo home run. Following Liquori's shot, junior
Anthony Gonzalez (Carmel/Carmel) worked a walk and made it to second off junior
Liam Kaseta's (Somers/Somers) single. After a sacrifice bunt moved him to third, Gonzalez scored on a groundout to give the Red Dragons a 3-1 lead.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Devils strung together three runs to take the lead. Kenneth Benitez hit a sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to one, Johnny Genau hit an RBI-single to tie the game and scored the lead-changing run off a Brian Chatt single. Â
Oneonta tied the game at four off Gonzalez's solo home run in the eighth, though the tie didn't last long as Fredonia scored the game-winning run off a fielder's choice in the bottom half of the inning. Â
Gonzalez and Liquori each had two hits and scored twice. Â
Freshman
Kyle Roper (Tappan/Tappan Zee) started the game for the Red Dragons, pitched 6.2 innings, allowed three runs on seven hits and struck out four. Junior
Logan Carriero (Somers/Somers) received the loss after pitching 0.2 innings, allowing one run off one hit, and striking out one. Â
Game Two – Oneonta 17, Fredonia 0
Oneonta took game two with authority, scoring 17 runs on 15 hits. Junior
Jake Barrett (Hauppauge/St. Anthony's) went 3-for-4, scored twice and brought in two. Kaseta and junior
Justin Maler (Brookhaven/Bellport) recorded two hits, had two RBI, and crossed home once. Senior
Matthew McAllister (Vestal/Vestal) had the game-high four RBI after going 1-for-1 with a couple sacrifice flies and walks, and junior
Nate Guillen (Haverstraw/North Rockland) finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Â
Senior
Michael Losak (Merrick/Sanford H. Calhoun) earned the win after pitching 6.0 innings, allowing four hits and striking out seven. Senior
Dean Langman (New Hartford/New Hartford) relieved Losak for the final inning and struck out two. Â

The Red Dragons return to action for a three-game SUNYAC series at Oswego starting on Friday at 3 pm.
