Baseball completes sweep over Canton

A Quick Look
The SUNY Oneonta baseball team completed the weekend series sweep, winning both games in the Sunday doubleheader against SUNY Canton. The Red Dragons won game one, 9-1, and took game two, 9-2, after being down 2-1 through five innings. Oneonta improved their record to 3-2.

The Inside Story
The Roos scored first in game one off Red Dragon miscues. Dyllon Bouger reached base on a hit by pitch, advanced to third on a fielding error, then scored off a wild pitch.

Oneonta answered back immediately in the first with two runs of their own. Senior Patrick McGee (Mahopac/Mahopac) led off the inning with a double and was brought in by fellow senior Matthew McAllister's (Vestal/Vestal) double. McAllister advanced to third before junior Sean Liquori (Thiells/North Rockland) brought him home with a single.

In the bottom of the third the Red Dragons added another pair of runs. Junior Jake Barrett (Hauppauge/St. Anthony's) had a two-out single that scored McGee from second. Barrett later stole third and made it home after the catcher had an error trying to throw him out.

Oneonta put up three more runs in the third, giving them a 7-1 lead. Senior Michael Sabatine (Fairport/Fairport) reached base safely on a Canton error and scored on another error. Freshman Andrew Bonilla (Walden/Valley Central) had an RBI single that scored junior Tyler Widercrantz (Wading River/Shoreham Wading River). Bonilla later crossed home off another Barrett single.

Before game one concluded, the Red Dragons scored two more in the sixth. Junior Anthony Gonzalez (Carmel/Carmel) hit an RBI single and Widercrantz hit a triple that scored Gonzalez.

The Roos held their ground and started the nightcap with a 2-0 lead after two innings.

Zach Miner hit a sacrifice fly that scored Bouger in the first, and Frank Nieto hit an RBI double in the second.

The Red Dragons cut the deficit in half in the fifth. Barrett got on base with a one-out double, advanced to third during the following at-bat, and scored on a defensive error.

Oneonta took the lead, and the game, after an eight-run sixth inning. Gonzalez and sophomore Cole Rockwell (Liverpool/Cicero-North Syracuse) started the inning with back-to-back singles. Senior Joe Ottaviano (Nanuet/Albertus Magnus) tied the game with a single through the right side. Rockwell and Ottaviano scored during a series of wild pitches and walks. Junior Liam Kaseta (Somers/Somers) increased the lead to 6-2 with a two-RBI single. In their second plate appearance of the inning, Rockwell worked a bases loaded walk and Ottaviano scored the last two with a single.

Just the Stats
Senior Michael Losak (Merrick/Sanford H. Calhoun) (1-0) received the win for game one. Losak pitched 6.0 innings, allowed three hits, one unearned run, and struck a career-high 11.
