A Quick Look
The SUNY Oneonta baseball team defeated SUNY Canton 13-2, in their home opener on Saturday. The win brings the Red Dragons record to 1-2 on the season.
The Inside Story
Oneonta put the game out of reach in the second inning, scoring five runs. The first run was scored after junior
Liam Kaseta (Somers/Somers) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Roos pitcher Kieran Gibson balked against the next batter, allowing junior
Justin Maler (Brookhaven/Bellport) a free walk to home. A few pitches later, senior
Patrick McGee (Mahopac/Mahopac) singled to left and scored one, putting Oneonta up 3-0. The last couple runs came when junior
Jake Barrett (Hauppauge/St. Anthony's) doubled to left center, and brought Kaseta and McGee across home.
The Red Dragons scored another five in the fifth. Barrett and junior
Sean Liquori (Thiells/North Rockland) started the inning with back-to-back singles, and junior
Anthony Gonzalez (Carmel/Carmel) capitalized on a fielding error to load the bases. Barrett scored on a passed ball during senior
Michael Sabatine's (Fairport/Fairport) at-bat. Sabatine worked a walk to keep the bases loaded for Maler, who singled up the middle to score Liquori and Gonzalez. Sophomore
Cole Rockwell (Liverpool/Cicero-North Syracuse) brought in Sabatine, and Maler scored the last run of the inning off a passed ball, giving Oneonta a 10-0 lead after five. Â
Sabatine scored Liquori and Gonzalez with a single in the sixth, extending the lead to 12. Â
Canton got on the board in the eighth off Noah Reyes' double, however Oneonta answered back in the bottom half of the eighth on a pickoff attempt throwing error. The Roos scored one last run in the ninth when Juan Diaz singled through the right side. Â
