Softball splits on opening day

A Quick Look
The SUNY Oneonta softball team opened the 2022 season today with a split of two games defeating Mary Baldwin in its first game and then falling to host Roanoke in the nightcap.

The Inside Story
Game 1 vs. Mary Baldwin – Oneonta 15, Mary Baldwin 7 (5 innings)

The Red Dragons didn't waste any time in putting runs on the scoreboard plating three in the bottom of the first inning.  Adriana Fiore led off with a walk and then went to third on a double off the bat of junior Marissa Nagel (Averill Park/Averill Park) to put a pair in scoring position.  Both runners came around to score on back-to-back singles by senior Caroline Koch (New City/Clarkstown South) and junior Gianna DiGiovanni (Wantagh/Sacred Heart Academy).  Koch scored the final run of the inning on a wild pitch.

Oneonta gave up two unearned runs in the top of the second before adding a pair of its own runs in the bottom of the inning.  With the bases loaded, DiGiovanni singled to right field to score Delaney Haley (Levittown/Division Avenue) and Fiori.

The Red Dragons continued the onslaught putting up six runs in the third inning.  Nagel and Koch each drove in a run while DiGiovanni added to her total with another pair of RBIs.  The final two runs of the inning came across when freshman catcher Julia Serena (White Plains/Valhalla) cracked her first collegiate home run.

Mary Baldwin pushed across five runs in the top of the fourth to cut its deficit to 11-7, but the Red Dragons added four more runs to its total in the home half of the inning to put its lead back to eight runs.  Freshman Cadence Brennan (Niskayuna/Niskayuna) drove in the first two runs of her collegiate career with a pinch-hit single scoring senior Megan Palmatier (Bainbridge/Bainbridge-Guilford) and classmate Sophia Mangone (Ardsley/Ardsley).

Senior Kathryn Davies (Tinton Falls, NJ/Monmouth Regional) threw four innings allowing just two earned runs to pick up her initial win of the season.

Game 2 vs. Roanoke - Roanoke 13, Oneonta 1 (5 innings)

The bats were held in check in the second game of the day versus Roanoke (6-0).  The Red Dragons did collect seven hits and scored its lone run in the second inning on an RBI single from sophomore Gianna Cancelleri (Naples, FL/Washingtonville (NY)) scoring DiGiovanni.

Brennan took the loss in her collegiate debut.

What's Next
Oneonta will complete its trip to Virginia tomorrow with another pair of games.  The Red Dragons will face Roanoke at 10am followed by Ferrum at noon.
