A Quick Look
The SUNY Oneonta baseball team was down one in the bottom of the eighth, when a pair of RBI-singles from juniors
Jake Barrett (Hauppauge/St. Anthony's) and
Anthony Gonzalez (Carmel/Carmel) lifted them over Utica, 5-4, Wednesday afternoon. The Red Dragons improved to 6-13 on the season, while the Pioneers head back home 6-4. Â
The Inside Story
Utica broke the scoreless tie in the third, when John Son hit a double to left center that brought in Brendan May. Oneonta knotted it back up in the bottom half of the inning, off a Barrett double that scored junior
Nate Guillen (Haverstraw/North Rockland).
The Pioneers gave themselves a two-run lead in the fourth off a pair of singles from Shamariah McCullough and Zac Cronk. Â
The Red Dragons got one back in the fifth. Senior
Matthew McAllister (Vestal/Vestal) reached first with a single to right, made it to third on a muffed pickoff attempt, and crossed home on a groundout. Â
Nathan Yantz made it a 4-2 Pioneer lead in the seventh with a double to right center. In the bottom half of the inning, runners were on the corners with a couple outs when junior
Sean Liquori (Thiells/North Rockland) hit an RBI single to center.
With the Red Dragons down one, freshman
Andrew Bonilla (Walden/Valley Central) worked a walk to begin the bottom eighth. Sophomore
Noah Frasca (St. James/St. John the Baptist) hit a single to left field and moved Bonilla to second with one out. Barrett followed Frasca with another single to left, scoring Bonilla and tying the game at four. One out later, Gonzalez hit the game-winning run (Frasca) in with a single to left field. Â
Just the Stats
Barrett, Liquori, and Bonilla each had two hits. Barrett and Gonzalez had a pair of RBIs, while Liquori had one. The bullpen was used on both sides as 11 total pitchers were used. Senior
