Baseball takes two against Cazenovia

A Quick Look
Days before conference play begins, the SUNY Oneonta baseball team (5-10) snapped their slump and swept a pair of games against Cazenovia (3-7) Sunday afternoon. The Red Dragons won game one 12-5 and took game two 8-3.

The Inside Story
Game One – Oneonta 12, Cazenovia 5

Both teams managed to load the bases, with no outs, in the first inning. The Wildcats tallied two runs off a couple groundouts, and the Red Dragons scored one off junior Liam Kaseta's (Somers/Somers) sacrifice fly.

Oneonta's bats came out in the third and fourth innings, scoring 11 runs and extending the lead 12-2. Freshman Andrew Bonilla (Walden/Valley Central) and senior Matthew McAllister (Vestal/Vestal) started the third with singles and moved 90 feet closer on a passed ball, for junior Anthony Gonzalez (Carmel/Carmel) to hit them both home with a double. Gonzalez moved to third on the fourth ball of junior Sean Liquori's (Thiells/North Rockland) walk, and scored during a defensive error where the Wildcat second baseman tried to tag Liquori out, but dropped the ball from his glove during the tag. Junior Franklin Padilla (Brooklyn/LaSalle Academy) got the bases loaded on a single with one out, and senior Patrick McGee (Mahopac/Mahopac) followed Padilla with a sacrifice fly that scored Liquori. The last run of the third was brought in on junior Nate Guillen's (Haverstraw/North Rockland) single.

In the fourth inning, McAllister reached on an error, Gonzalez hit a single and Liquori walked, loading the bases with no outs. McAllister scored on a double play, giving the Red Dragons a 7-2 lead with two outs and Gonzalez on third. After Padilla worked a walk and made it to second on a wild pitch, sophomore Noah Frasca (St. James/St. John the Baptist) hit a double to left center and scored Padilla with Gonzalez. McGee kept the two-out rally going with a walk, and Guillen brought in Frasca with a single through the left side. McGee and Guillen advanced to second and third on a passed ball, and both crossed home on separate wild pitches.

Before the end of game one, Cazenovia worked a three-run rally in the sixth. Wildcats' Anthony Cretella, Jack Lees, and Cameron Ciampaglia started the inning with three singles. Parker Wing brought in Cretella on a sacrifice fly, and Lees scored during the same play from a throw that went out of play. Ciampaglia was the last to cross home after Brandon Reid hit a single.

Bonilla led the team with three hits game one, he also scored once. Gonzalez and Guillen had two hits, and two RBI. Kaseta and Frasca also recorded two RBI and scored once. Senior Joe Ottaviano (Nanuet/Albertus Magnus) (1-0) received the win after pitching 6.0 innings, allowing seven hits, four earned runs, and striking out five. Senior Dean Langman (New Hartford/New Hartford) pitched the last inning and struck out two of the three batters he faced.

Game Two – Oneonta 8, Cazenovia 3
The Red Dragons got on the board first in the nightcap after an error scored Bonilla in the first inning.

The Wildcats tied the game in the third when Lachlan Rees' hit a double that brought Ciampaglia home.

Similar to the game one's two-inning scoring rally, Oneonta tacked on seven runs in the fourth and fifth innings of game two. With one out in the fourth, Ottaviano reached base with a single. One out later, McGee doubled to left center and scored Ottaviano. McGee would cross home off Guillen's single, and Guillen was moved to second after Bonilla's walk. Both got into scoring position on a wild pitch and touched home on McAllister's single up the middle.

In the fifth inning, McGee cleared the bases with a three-run double to left center, giving the Red Dragons an 8-1 lead.

Cazenovia scored two more on Lees' two-run home run to left field in the sixth.

Ottaviano went 3-for-4 and scored twice, while McGee went 2-for-3 with four RBI and a run scored. Sophomore Michael Sadowski (Queens/Queens Metropolitan) (1-1) received the win after pitching 6.0 innings, allowing four hits, three runs, and striking out six. Sophomore Kyle Rosenberger (Montgomery/Valley Central) pitched the final inning, allowed one hit and struck out one.
