Baseball drops two to RIT

A Quick Look
The SUNY Oneonta baseball team (3-10) dropped a pair of games Saturday against RIT (10-3) at Red Dragon Baseball Field. The Red Dragons fell in the opener 6-1, and 8-5 in the nightcap.

The Inside Story
Game 1 – RIT 6, Oneonta 1

The Tigers capitalized on a couple of passed balls in the second inning and got out to an early 2-0 lead. In the bottom half of the inning, Oneonta got a run back. Senior Matthew McAllister (Vestal/Vestal) singled through the left side and advanced to second on a pass ball. Junior Kevin Walters (Staten Island/Susan E. Wagner) moved McAllister to third with a single, and sophomore Noah Frasca (St. James/St. John the Baptist) scored him with a sacrifice fly.

RIT scored one in the fourth off a bases-loaded passed ball.

The Tigers took a 6-1 lead after scoring a pair of runs in the fifth and one in the sixth. Christopher Colella hit a one-out sacrifice fly in the fifth that scored Kyle Poorman and moved Zach Mecca to third. Mecca touched home later on a wild pitch, and brought in the final run with a single.

Junior Anthony Gonzalez (Carmel/Carmel) and McAllister went 2-for-3 in the game. Senior Matthew Petrossi (Fairport/Fairport) suffered the loss after pitching 1.2 innings, two unearned runs, and striking out three.

Game 2 – RIT 8, Oneonta 5
The Tigers gained a 5-0 lead after a couple Red Dragon errors in the first. After getting runners on first and second, Nate Kistler laid down a bunt that turned into a throwing error and scored one. A pair of passed balls cleared the bases, bringing in two more for RIT. Following a walk and a stolen base, Christopher Colella hit an RBI-single and would later cross home on an error.

The Red Dragons put three on the board in the second. Freshmen Reece Joint (Honeoye Falls/Honeoye Falls-Lima) and Andrew Bonilla (Walden/Valley Central), along with sophomore Gregory Bandura (Pine Bush/Pine Bush) led off with three walks. Joint scored on a passed ball, McAllister hit Bandura in with a single, and Bonilla scored on a single from junior Jake Barrett (Hauppauge/St. Anthony's).

RIT made it 6-3 in the third with a single from Will Porter.

John Bagley and Chris Reilly both hit an RBI-single in the sixth, extending the Tigers lead to five.

Junior Liam Kaseta (Somers/Somers) and Bonilla started a rally in the final inning, both recording singles. Senior Patrick McGee (Mahopac/Mahopac) brought both in with a double to left field. The Red Dragons had the tying-run at the plate, but ended the game with a double play.

McAllister went 2-for-4 with an RBI in game two, and Bonilla finished 2-for-3 with two runs. Senior Michael Losak (Merrick/Sanford H. Calhoun) received the loss after pitching 5.0+ innings, allowing eight runs (two earned), and striking out seven. Junior Logan Carriero (Somers/Somers) pitched the final 2.0 innings, allowed two hits, and struck out three.
