Softball takes two on day 2 of Florida trip

A Quick Look
The SUNY Oneonta softball team swept a pair of games today on day 2 of its Florida trip.  The Red Dragons pulled off a dramatic, come-from-behind, victory versus Kenyon College in game 1 and then easily defeated SUNY Canton in five innings in game 2.

The Inside Story
Game 1 – Oneonta 3, Kenyon 2

Oneonta (4-4) trailed 2-0 entering the bottom of the fifth inning.  Kenyon (13-2) scored single runs in both the 2nd and 4th innings.

With two outs in the fifth, sophomore Victoria Hussey (Nesconset/Smithtown East) singled sharply up the middle.  The next batter was junior Adriana Fiori (Newtown, CT/Brookfield), who tripled deep to right field to drive in Hussey with Oneonta's first run.

Trailing 2-1 entering its final at-bat in the seventh, junior Gianna DiGiovanni (Wantagh/Sacred Heart Academy) led off with a single up the middle before giving way to Tori Brower (West Islip/West Islip) who took her spot on first base.  Sophomore Sara Cartier (Cicero/Cicero-North Syracuse) then pinch-hit and laid down a bunt that was not handled cleanly and she beat it out giving Oneonta two runners on with no outs.

The next two batters were retired bringing junior Gianna Cancelleri (Naples, FL/Washingtonville (NY)) to the plate.  Cancelleri hit a clutch double down the right field line that scored Brower while putting the potential winning run on third.  A miscue by the shortstop on a ground ball hit by junior Marissa Nagel (Averill Park/Averill Park) allowed Cartier to score the winning run.

Sophomore Lauren Weber (Sayville/Sayville) had another solid outing in relief pitching four innings of one-hit ball allowing no earned runs to pick up her second straight win.  Weber recorded four strikeouts.

Nagel led the offense with a pair of hits in the game.

Game 2 – Oneonta 12, SUNY Canton 0 (5 innings)

Oneonta overwhelmed the Roos in its second game today.  The Red Dragons collected 12 hits scoring runs in each of the four innings that they hit in the game.  Sophomore Marissa Dionisio (Sayville/Sayville) picked up her first win of the season working four innings and striking out four batters.

Freshman Sophia Mangone (Ardsley/Ardsley) banged out three hits, scored three runs and drove in a pair of runs to pace the offense.  Cancelleri added two hits and drove in two runs.  Freshman Amanda Zuntag (Staten Island/Notre Dame Academy) recorded her first collegiate hit in the fourth inning.

What's Next

Oneonta will have an off-day tomorrow before returning to action on Thursday with games against Skidmore and Nazareth.
