Baseball drops doubleheader to Rutgers-Camden in Season Opener

A Quick Look
The SUNY Oneonta baseball team dropped their doubleheader against Rutgers-Camden to open the 2022 season Sunday afternoon. The Red Dragons lost 8-2 in the first game before falling 4-0 in game two.

The Inside Story
In game one, the Raptors got on the board in the first inning off a passed ball.

The Red Dragons answered back, and took the lead, scoring two in the third. Senior center fielder Patrick McGee (Mahopac/Mahopac) got on with a single, and senior first baseman Matthew McAllister (Vestal/Vestal) worked a walk to get two men on with two outs. Junior second baseman Jake Barrett (Hauppauge/St. Anthony's) scored McGee with a single to short, and junior designated hitter Sean Liquori (Thiells/North Rockland) followed and scored McAllister with a single to left.

Rutgers-Camden regained the lead in the fourth for good, with one run coming on a wild pitch and another off Auggie Uzdanovics' single.

The Raptors put the game out of reach in the sixth inning when they scored five more. Danny Vazquez and Jesse Gerdes each had two-RBI singles in the inning.

Liquori received the loss and pitched 2.1 innings, allowed four runs off four hits, and struck out one. Senior Michael Losak (Merrick/Sanford H. Calhoun) started the game and pitched 3.0 innings, allowed one hit, one unearned run, and struck out five. Senior Benjamin Marsh (Halifax, Nova Scotia/Lockview) pitched 0.2 innings, allowed three hits, two earned runs, and struck out one.

In game two, Rutgers-Camden scored their four runs in the first three innings.

In the top of the third, sophomore second baseman Bradley Turner (Stone Ridge/Rondout Valley) got things going for the Red Dragons with a single. McAllister advanced Turner to second with a single to left, but couldn't get him any closer to home.

Junior catcher Justin Maler (Brookhaven/Bellport) tried one last time to get things started with a double in the fifth, however it wasn't enough and Oneonta lost game two, 4-0.

Sophomore Michael Sadowski (Queens/Queens Metropolitan) received the loss after pitching 2.1 innings, allowing six hits, four runs, and striking out three. Senior Matthew Petrossi (Fairport/Fairport) pitched 2.2 innings, allowed no hits, and struck out one. Sophomore Kyle Rosenberger (Montgomery/Valley Central) pitched 1.0 inning and allowed no runners.

For game two, Raptors John Kasper pitched a complete game, allowed three hits, and struck out five.

Just the Stats
Barrett and Liquori both ended game one 2-for-3 with an RBI.
