Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

Men's tennis defeated in spring opener

Canton, NY - The SUNY Oneonta Men's Tennis Team played their first dual match in over 9-months and only their sixth team competition in almost two-years. They entered into the competition against the Liberty League powerhouse squad hoping to stay close and threaten the Cardinals.

The 8-1 loss does not show the competitive nature of several of the matches.   Noteworthy was the number one doubles team of senior Riley Smith (Westhampton Beach/Westhampton Beach) and junior Mason Spottek (Binghamton/Susquehanna Valley) staying close with their competitors and were actually up 4-3 before the Cardinals won five of the next six games and pulled away on route to an 8-5 win.  The Red Dragon men then went on to lose in the doubles stanza 3-0.

With a 3-0 hole against a high caliber team the Red Dragons could have packed up.  However, they kept the Cardinals on the court for quite sometime.

The highlight on the afternoon was the play of junior August LePique (New York, NY/Columbia) who stepped in for the first time at number one singles and came away with the lone Oneonta victory on the day.  LePique dropped the first set 6-1 but he fought back to take the second set 7-5 and went on to grind his opponent down taking the finale super-tiebreaker 10-6 clinching the victory with his teammates rooting him on.  Also noteworthy was Spottek at second singles playing a very competitive first set losing only by a break of serve 6-3 before bowing in straight sets.

The SUNY Oneonta Men's Tennis Team have a very tough schedule this season and next up is the perennial Skyline Conference Champions Yeshiva University to be played on Thursday evening, February 24th at the Carey Leeds Tennis Center in Bronx, NY beginning at 7 PM.  The Red Dragons have played Yeshiva University four-times and are 2-2 in their dual match head to head competition.
