ONEONTA, N.Y. -- With the 2022-23 season opener tied at 40 with five minutes to play, the SUNY Oneonta women's basketball team went on a 9-0 run that led to a 51-47 victory over Hartwick, Tuesday evening. Senior
Olivia Dobrovosky (Skaneateles/Skaneateles) contributed on seven of the nine points during the stretch and finished the game with 15 points and 12 rebounds.
After allowing the first couple baskets, Oneonta (1-0) went on a 21-5 run that trickled into the second quarter. Dobrovosky started the run with a layup at 8:07 in the first and scored six points during the stretch. Senior
Meg Nardelli (Wappingers Falls/Roy C. Ketcham) knocked down a triple and junior
Jenna Harclerode (Sayville/Sayville) and sophomore
Nadia Brown (Troy/Troy) ended the first with a pair of free throws to give the Red Dragons a 16-9 lead.
Nardelli drained her second three to start the second quarter and on the next possession sophomore
Sophia Wakin (Delhi/Delaware Academy) made a layup to make it a 21-9 advantage with 9:12 left in the half. The Hawks (0-1) clawed back into the game and cut the deficit to five with a 14-7 run to end the second. Sareena DiCerbro led the Hawks scoring five points during the stretch while junior
Molly Stephens (LaGrange/Arlington) scored four of Oneonta's last seven and went into the half up 28-23.
Halfway through the third quarter, Hartwick gained their first lead since the opening baskets of the game. Down two with 6:23 in the third, DiCerbo converted an and-one to bump the Hawks up 31-30. The lead bounced back and forth until Dobrovosky made a jump shot at 4:32. Sophomore
Amanda Zuntag (Staten Island/Notre Dame Academy) hit a jumper with 1:40 left in the third to extend Oneonta's lead to five but Angelina Maselli answered with a three before the quarter ended and Oneonta went into the fourth up two.
Brown opened the scoring in the fourth to make it 40-36 with 8:37 remaining, however the Hawks were able to keep the Red Dragons scoreless and tie the game at 40 with 4:54 to play. Out of a timeout Oneonta created separation from Hartwick with a 9-0 run. Dobrovosky hit the first shot and after Nardelli went one-for-two from the line, Dobrovosky drilled another two jumpers on back-to-back possessions. The stretch ended when Dobrovosky found Harclerode for a reverse layup with 1:46 remaining, putting the Red Dragons up 49-40.
Despite the late lead, the Hawks brought themselves to within four with a minute left after Perry hit a jumper and Caitie Unger made a three-pointer. Nardelli split a pair of free throws with 20 seconds left to keep it a two-possession game, but Isabella Astorino answered with a jumper to cut the deficit to three with 11 seconds left. Brown closed out the game with a free throw as the Red Dragons opened the season with a win.
Along with Dobrovosky's double-double, Wakin, Brown, and Nardelli each recorded eight points. Wakin tacked on eight rebounds, Brown had three assists, and Nardelli finished 2-for-6 beyond the arc.
DiCerbo finished with a double-double, 10 points and 12 rebounds. Maselli, Astorino, Unger, and Perry all finished with eight points.
Oneonta shot 32.3 percent from the field and grabbed 37 rebounds while Hartwick shot 31 percent and had 40 rebounds.
The Red Dragons are back in action Thursday as they travel to face Skidmore at 7 pm.
