POTSDAM, N.Y. -Â Despite an even match, the Oneonta women's soccer team fell to a late first-half Potsdam penalty kick goal in the 41st minute. The Bears' Sarah Emmi netted the goal at 41:51 to move Potsdam to 6-7 overall and 2-4 in the SUNYAC. Oneonta falls to 2-6-1 overall and 0-3-1 in the conference.Â
Potsdam went on the offensive early when Julia Tycott shot into the bottom center of the frame at 1:47, but goalie Claire Lepper (Poland, NY/Poland) made the stop. Jianna Chapman (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville) fired a shot high following an Oneonta corner kick, and then Leighann Perciballi (Northport, NY/Kings Park) had an attempt turned aside by the Bears' goalkeeper.
The pace slowed afterward, and a yellow card on Lepper at 41:51 gave Potsdam the penalty kick attempt. Emmi chipped the ball past Lepper, and the Bears took a 1-0 lead heading into the break.Â
Senior Emma Kirkpatrick (Wading River, NY/Shoreham Wading River) found an open look at 54:58 and fired the ball at the Bears' goal. Goalkeeper Ryelee Semco was able to pick up the save, though. Lepper picked up a pair of saves in the 72nd and 74th minutes. The Red Dragons had a few more chances from Shannon Lowney (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) and Kaiden Ring (East Greenbush, NY/Columbia) but could not find the back of the net.Â
Shots were tied 9-9, but Oneonta held a 7-3 corner kick advantage. Lepper made four saves, while Potsdam's Semco had two.Â
The Red Dragons return home to play Brockport on Sat. Oct. 8 at 1 p.m. for senior day.Â
