Red Dragons Outpace Broncos

DELHI, N.Y. - Led by a match-high 14 kills from Clara Culeton (Oswego, NY/Oswego), the Oneonta women's volleyball team downed Delhi 3-0 on Wednesday evening. The Red Dragons have now swept two straight opponents and move to 9-10 overall, while the Broncos slip to 7-7.

Oneonta took the first set 25-20, then cruised to a 25-13 victory in the second before taking the third 25-16.

After some early back-and-forth points in the first, Delhi took a 6-3 lead. Two kills from Culeton, a kill from Caitlin Christie (Bay Shore, NY/Bay Shore), and a block by Culeton and McCabe made it 7-6. Oneonta held on to a 9-8 lead following a kill from Ashanti Davis (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Hendrick Hudson), but the Broncos rallied to score the following four points. The Red Dragons chipped their way back in and used a 5-0 span with two kills by Casey Biggers (Holtsville, NY/Sachem East) to retake the lead at 17-14. The Broncos kept it a one-point game following a kill by Stephanie Burke before Culeton capped off a 5-0 Oneonta run with two kills. Delhi scored three straight to cut the lead to 24-20, but a final service error gave Oneonta the opening set.

The Red Dragons jumped to a 7-0 lead in the second, with Annalisa Alicea (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington) sending in two aces. Another 7-0 run comprised of two Kayla Rende (Wantagh, NY/Wantagh) service aces made it 17-2. The Red Dragons allowed a few Broncos runs, but Casey Biggers (Holtsville, NY/Sachem East) sent in a kill for set point.

After a 3-0 Delhi run in the third, Oneonta held a 9-7 advantage. Gianna May (Baldwinsville, NY/Baldwinsville) blocked a Katelyn Babcock attack before Davis tacked on a kill. Oneonta maintained a comfortable lead when Culeton and Isabella Fabrizio (Highland Mills, NY/Cornwall) sent in kills to make it 19-12. The Red Dragons took three of the final four points, with McCabe earning the match-winning kill.

Culeton hit .650 percent with three blocks and five digs. Davis added seven kills, and McCabe finished with three. Carsyn Rachuta (Holbrook, NY/Sachem North) grabbed a team-high 14 digs, while Biggers and Alicea each recorded ten. Rende finished with 27 assists.

Oneonta returns home on Fri. Oct. 14 to play Buffalo State at 6 p.m. in Chase Gymnasium.
