ONEONTA, N.Y. – On Wednesday afternoon, the visiting Plattsburgh Cardinals scored in the 80th and 82nd minutes to defeat the Oneonta women's soccer team 2-0. With the loss, Oneonta falls to 2-8-1 and 0-5-1 in the SUNYAC. Plattsburgh now moves to 8-5-1 and 3-3-1 in the conference.
Despite the score, it was an even contest in the first half, with the Red Dragons holding a 5-4 shot advantage. First-year Kaiden Ring (East Greenbush, NY/Columbia) took a pair of shots at 22:04 and then at 27:55 but could not find the frame. Sophomore Shannon Lowney (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) fired a long-range shot into the top-right, but Plattsburgh goalkeeper Lauren Haley got a hand on the ball, The Cardinals' Avery Durgan made one more attempt before the half, but it remained 0-0.
Neither side tallied a shot until Plattsburgh's Sam Spear shot bottom center. Goalie Claire Lepper (Poland, NY/Poland) made the stop. At 80:25, Nora Fitzgerald drew a foul inside the box for the penalty kick attempt. She capitalized and put the Cardinals ahead 1-0. Plattsburgh scored again off a corner kick when Zoe Rice found the back of the net at 82:29.
Plattsburgh outshot Oneonta 8-5 with a 9-3 corner kick advantage. Lepper made four saves in goal.
Oneonta next travels to face Oswego on Sat. Oct. 15 at 3:30 p.m.
