A Quick Look
In a defensive battle, it was the SUNY Oneonta women's basketball team that came out on top versus Geneseo tonight at home 46-36. The win for the Red Dragons puts them at 9-7 overall and 6-3 in the SUNYAC while the loss for the Knights drops them to 7-7 overall and 4-4 in conference play.
Â
The Inside Story
As has been the case in recent games, Oneonta made its free throws down the stretch to secure the victory. The Red Dragons didn't even attempt a free throw through the first three quarters, but went 8-for-10 in the final quarter all in the final two minutes of the contest.
Â
Oneonta jumped out to an early 8-2 lead enroute to grabbing a 14-6 advantage at the end of the opening quarter. The Red Dragons made 6-of-15 shots including a pair of three-pointers.
Â
Both teams found the going a bit tougher in the second quarter, as the two teams combined for only 11 points. Geneseo scored nine points in the quarter and Oneonta managed only one bucket hitting 1-of13 from the floor. Oneonta went into halftime with a slim 16-15 lead.
Â
Oneonta duplicated its effort from the first quarter in the third quarter outscoring the knights 14-7 to push its lead to eight points entering the fourth quarter. Junior
Meg Nardelli (Wappingers Falls/Roy C. Ketcham) lifted the effort with eight points off the bench.
Â
The Knights got as close as five points late before Oneonta converted its free throws to take to win.
Â
Just the Stats
Nardelli finished the game with 11 points as did sophomore
Molly Stephens (LaGrange/Arlington). Nardelli led the bench effort along with senior
Megan Palmatier (Bainbridge/Bainbridge-Guilford) and junior
Elizabeth Thompson (Morris/Morris) who combined for 11 points off the bench.
Â
Oneonta outrebounded Geneseo 42-32 while holding the Knights to just 26 percent shooting.
