Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's basketball defeats Buffalo State down the stretch

A Quick Look
For the second game in a row, freshman Nadia Brown (Troy/Troy) made clutch free throws to help seal a victory.  Tonight, she was 6-for-6 in the final 17 seconds to hold off the visiting Buffalo State Bengals 71-67.

The win was the third straight for the Red Dragons who are now 8-6 overall and 5-2 in the SUNYAC.  The loss for the Bengals dropped them to 5-6 overall and 2-3 in conference play.

The Inside Story
A jumper by senior Megan Palmatier (Bainbridge/Bainbridge-Guilford) with 2:08 remaining in the game put Oneonta up by nine points at 65-56.  The Bengals would not back down chipping away at the Oneonta lead closing it to just three points at 65-62 on a Adiya Jones jumper with 29 seconds left.  From that point it was all Brown, who kept the Bengals out of distance.

A couple of ties and a few lead changes in the opening period was how the game started.  Oneonta broke a 9-all tie with five straight points before the Bengals regained the lead with a 9-2 run to end the quarter with a slim 18-16 lead.

Oneonta put together back-to-back solid quarters outscoring Buffalo State 40-28 to lead 56-46 entering the fourth quarter.  The Red Dragons trailed for most of the second quarter before overtaking the Bengals in the final three minutes to grab a 30-27 lead at the break.  Junior Olivia Dobrovosky (Skaneateles/Skaneateles) led the way in the second quarter with six points.

Freshman Amanda Zuntag (Staten Island/Notre Dame Academy) got things rolling in the third quarter for Oneonta scoring six straight points.  Junior Meg Nardelli (Wappingers Falls/Roy C. Ketcham) came off the bench to bury a pair of three-pointers in the final three minutes to help the Red Dragons expand its lead.

Just the Stats
The bench played a big role in tonight's win outscoring the Buffalo State reserves 23-14.  Oneonta had another tremendous night from the free throw line converting 17-of-18.

Senior Katie Villarini of Buffalo State led all scorers in the game with 36 points.
