Volleyball Drops Two at Union Crosstown Challenge

The SUNY Oneonta volleyball team dropped a pair of 3-1 decisions to Skidmore and Sage on Saturday morning at the Union/Russell Sage Crosstown Challenge. The Red Dragons are now 1-9 on the year.

The Inside Story
Against Skidmore, Ashanti Davis (Cortlandt Manor/Hendrick Hudson) and Caitlin Christie (Bay Shore/Bay Shore) led Oneonta with eight kills apiece while Ashlee Mazzella (Warwick/Warwick Valley) chipped in with seven. Isabella Fabrizio (Highland Mills/Cornwall) delivered a match-high seven service aces. Sophia Gerace (Pearl River/Pearl River) dished out a team-high 19 assists while Alexandra Parillo (Oakdale/Connetquot) had 11 digs. The Red Dragons captured the second set 25-23. With the set knotted at 16-16, Oneonta went on a 5-0 run with Kayla Rende (Wantagh/Wantagh) at the service to go in front 21-16. Caitlin Christie (Bay Shore/Bay Shore) ended the set with a kill on an assist from Sophia Gerace (Pearl River/Pearl River).

Against Sage, Casey Biggers (Holtsville/Sachem East) paced Oneonta with 13 kills while Ashlee Mazzella (Warwick/Warwick Valley) and Caitlin Christie (Bay Shore/Bay Shore) contributed ten apiece. Mazzella also had a team-high ten digs along with four service aces. Haileigh Deming (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) dished out 17 assists in the loss. The Red Dragons rallied to take the second set 27-25. Oneonta found themselves in an 11-3 hole early in the set. The Red Dragons began to chip away with a 12-2 run, to take a 15-14 advantage. With Sage clinging to a 25-24 lead, Oneonta completed the comeback with a 3-0 run to take the set.

What's Next
The Red Dragons return to action on Friday, September 24th when they host Potsdam in a SUNYAC battle beginning at 6:00PM.
