Oneonta, NY – In only the second match hosted by Red Dragons in the last 24 months and for the second day in a row the men's tennis team competed but dropped a marathon dual 6-3 completing the match just before darkness set in.
The battle in doubles was over an hour long. When the dust settled the lone Red Dragon win came at second flight in a tiebreaker. Coming back from service breaks twice the pair of sophomores Mason Spotteck and
Jacob Dornsife (Wilmington, DE/Mt. Pleasant) emerged victorious with a score of 8-7 (7-2). The win kept Oneonta in the match only down 2-1 going into the singles stanza.
Singles matches lasted 2 ½ hours before darkness, but RIT reigned in a victory. However, singles wins came from senior
Riley Smith (Westhampton Beach/Westhampton Beach) at the third tier as he was dominant in a straight set win compiling a 6-3, 6-1 triumph. The match of the day came from the second position as sophomore August Lepique displayed incredible mental toughness and grit. Lepique dropped the first set that took over an hour to complete in a tiebreaker. Showing resilience and determination in the second set that took another hour to be completed, Lepique stormed back to deadlock the match at one-set all tallying a 6-4 second set victory. From there Lepique was dominant in the tiebreaker emerging with the 10-6 score and the third match victory on the day against RIT.
Despite the setback the Red Dragons played very well and will conclude a week of tough tennis as they head to SUNY Oswego and play the Lakers on Thursday, April 8
th with a match start time of 3 PM. There they will try and get to the .500 mark on the shortend spring season.
