Men’s Tennis Bounces Back with shutout of Oswego

Back to .500 on the season

April 8, 2021

Oswego, NY –  After a four-hour marathon against RIT the day prior the Red Dragons had less than 24 hours to recover and then got on a bus for the three-hour ride to challenge the SUNY Oswego Lakers.  The SUNY Oneonta men responded in a huge way and shutout the Lakers 9-0.  In the process the Red Dragons never lost more than two games in any of the sets.

Doubles was all the Red Dragons when the top tier of junior Matthew Reinhold (New Windsor/Newburgh Free Academy) and senior Riley Smith (Westhampton Beach/Westhampton Beach) lost the first game but rattled off the next eight to clinch the match.  Sophomores Jacob Dornsife (Wilmington, DE/Mt. Pleasant) and Mason Spotteck were perfect in shutting out their opponents in the second flight.  The third duo of seniors Ben Cohen (Dresher, PA/Upper Dublin) and Lucas Irace (Goshen/Goshen Central) stumbled briefly at the beginning of the match but quickly settled down to an 8-2 triumph.

A 3-0 lead after the doubles put the Lakers on their heels and they could not recover.  Reinhold at the top spot had some tough rallies to fight through but in the end he cruised to an 6-2, 6-1 win.  The second flight found sophomore August Lepique still sore from a 2 ½ match the day prior but had little pushback from his Laker foe and dominated in a 6-1, 6-0 win.  Spotteck also was never in any trouble and went onto a 6-2, 6-1 win in the third singles spot.  Dornisfe playing fourth singles today dropped only one game in his 6-1, 6-0 victory.  Cohen got the start in Oswego playing in the fifth position and also only dropped one game on the road to his 6-0, 6-1 triumph.  Finally freshman Joshua Mann (East Greenbush/Columbia) got the start today in the sixth singles spot and cruised to his second career win recording a 6-0, 6-1 win.

The Red Dragon men will take a short break after 10-days of intense tennis and will have to wait until Saturday, May 1st to compete against these same SUNY Oswego Lakers in this home and home matchup at the Heissan Tennis Courts.
