Battle of Red Dragons dual in women’s tennis goes to Oneonta in a 9-0 shutout

Third shutout of SUNYAC opponent this season

April 27, 2021

Oneonta, NY – The battle of the Red Dragons in women's tennis took place on the Heissan Tennis Courts in Oneonta today with SUNY Oneonta overwhelming the Cortland team with a shutout 9-0.  It was the second day in a row that Oneonta Women's Tennis had a shutout against a SUNYAC foe.

Doubles had a different look today.  The number one team of junior Olivia Fraser (Queensbury/Queensbury) and senior Mya Lipscomb (Peekskill/Walter Panas) had little trouble with dominant serves and net play as they shutout their opponents 8-0.  On the second flight the pair of junior Madeline Carswell (Bethlehem/Bethlehem Central) and freshman Sophia Schutte (Great Neck/Great Neck) had little pushback from Cortland and they won 8-1.  In the third position junior Rebecca Macdonald (Brooklyn/Leon M. Goldstein) and senior Gianna Papini (Hewlett/George W. Hewlett) closed out the foes also with a shutout 8-0.  Oneonta lost only one-game in the doubles stanza and with that a commanding 3-0 lead moving into singles play.

In singles Fraser playing in the top spot again today got into a tough match with her Cortland opponent having to hit lots of groundstrokes to finally oust her stubborn foe with a score of 6-2, 6-2.  In the second tier Lipscomb completed her outstanding day with a commanding 6-1, 6-0 win.  Schutte started in the third position as she secured a straight set win only losing three-games total on route to a 6-2, 6-1 win.  Carswell also went onto a straight set win with a 6-1, 6-2 triumph playing number four this afternoon.  In the fifth spot freshman Jayden Carrillo (Yorktown/Yorktown) matched her teammates going onto a straight set victory clinching the singles contest 6-1, 6-3.  Finally, Macdonald made it a clean sweep for Oneonta as she double bageled her opponent playing number six singles 6-0, 6-0.

Two noteworthy pieces of news was Mya Lipscomb (Peekskill/Walter Panas) and Gianna Papini (Hewlett/George W. Hewlett) playing their last home matches as seniors and both produced important victories on senior day.

Junior Brianna Harmon (Endicott/Union Endicott) had a great win playing in the exhibition seventh position and produced an impressive 6-0, 6-0 win.

The win moves Oneonta to 3-1 on the verge of clinching a playoff spot.  However, they will have to contend with the SUNY Cortland Red Dragons again with a match scheduled for Thursday, April 29th @ 3 PM on the campus of SUNY Cortland.
