Softball settles for doubleheader split at home versus New Paltz

Red Dragons win game 1 in a walk-off

A Quick Look
The SUNY Oneonta softball team split a doubleheader at home today versus New Paltz winning in a walk-off 2-1 in game 1 before falling in the nightcap 5-3.  Oneonta is now 7-5 overall while New Paltz is 2-8 overall.

The Inside Story
Game 1 was a pitcher's duel between junior Kathryn Davies (Tinton Falls, NJ/Monmouth Regional) of Oneonta and Emily Fox of New Paltz.  The game was scoreless through the first three innings before Oneonta plated the game's first run in the home half of the fourth.

Freshman Aysia Oliver (Brentwood/Brentwood) led off the Oneonta fourth with a double to left center before being sacrificed over to third by senior Meaghan Raleigh (Endwell/Maine Endwell).  The next batter was junior Megan Palmatier (Bainbridge/Bainbridge-Guilford) and she drove in Oliver with a sharp single to center field.

New Paltz tied the game in the top of the sixth on an RBI single off the bat of Sydney Bonewit to drive in Rhionna Bianchini who reentered the game as a runner after being pinch-hit for to start the inning.

In the bottom of the seventh, Palmatier led off the inning with a double down the left field line and moved to third on a wild pitch one batter later.  The game ended when rookie third baseman Gianna Cancelleri (Campbell Hall/Washingtonville) singled through the left side to knock in Palmatier with the game-winning run.

Davies earned her first win of the season allowing four hits and striking out three Hawks.  Fox struck out five batters and allowed nine hits in the loss.

In game 2, New Paltz scored a pair of runs in the second inning to go ahead.  The Hawks loaded the bases with one out and scored its first run on a walk to Nina Simms.  The second run came in to score on a fielder's choice to short left field, as Oneonta made the force play at third while also putting out Simms in a run down between first and second base to end the inning.

Oneonta got one back in the fourth when senior Amber Badillo (Mohegan Lake/Shrub Oak) knocked in classmate Kristen Collins (Hicksville/Holy Trinity) from third.  Collins beat out a hit to second base to lead off the inning, went to second base on a ground out, then went to third on a passed ball.

A three-run fifth inning stretched New Paltz's lead to 5-1.  The big hit in the inning was a single up the middle by Lauren Shambo that drove in a pair with the bases loaded.  Simms drove in the third run of the inning on a single through the left side that scored Kelly Marmorowski.

The Red Dragons rallied a bit with single runs in the fifth and sixth, but fell short in the seventh on a game-ending double play.

Hunter VanArnum (Schuylerville/Schuylerville) suffered the loss for Oneonta pitching four innings and allowing two runs.  Katie Quagliana went the distance for the Hawks to pick up her first win of the season allowing six hits and striking out three.

What's Next
Oneonta is not scheduled to play again until next Tuesday when they host Potsdam for a doubleheader beginning at 3pm.
