Ewing, NJ – After a 13-month hiatus due to the COVID shutdown the SUNY Oneonta Red Dragons Men's Tennis Team opened up the spring 2021 season against national power house TCNJ and dropped a 9-0 decision in what was a competitive match despite the shutout loss. It was a tough way to open up a shortened season but from the frying pan into the fire the Red Dragons went. TCNJ was coming off a big win against Division 1 Coppin State earlier this week defeating them 7-2.
In doubles the Red Dragan kept pace with TCNJ in the first and third flights. Senior
Riley Smith (Westhampton Beach/Westhampton Beach) and Junior
Matthew Reinhold (New Windsor/Newburgh Free Academy) were on serve at 4-5 but lost the next three games losing 8-4. A similar fate occurred in third doubles as seniors
Ben Cohen (Dresher, PA/Upper Dublin) and
Lucas Irace (Goshen/Goshen Central) kept pace with the score tied 5-5 but also were setback 8-5.
A 3-0 deficit after doubles was a tall order to come back against TCNJ. The Red Dragons lost all singles matches. Noteworthy was Cohen in the sixth position tied at 5-5 in the first set but the Red Dragon captain eventually succumbed 7-5, 6-1. In the fourth position sophomore Mason Spotteck was up early in the second set against his TCNJ foe but went down 6-1, and a close second set 6-4.
The SUNY Oneonta Red Dragons will quickly get back in action on Tuesday, April 6th hosting SUNY Delhi on the Heissan Tennis Courts. The match begins at 3 PM.
