Softball drops pair at home to Plattsburgh

A Quick Look
The SUNY Oneonta softball team was swept today by Plattsburgh in SUNYAC action losing game 1, 7-4 and game 2, 11-7.  The pair of losses for the Red Dragons drops them to 6-4 overall and 6-4 in East Division play while Plattsburgh evened its overall record to 6-6 and 5-5 in the East.

The Inside Story
In the opener, Oneonta broke a scoreless tie with three runs in the bottom of the second inning.  Senior Amber Badillo (Mohegan Lake/Shrub Oak) led off the inning with a single through the left side.  Pinch-runner Tori Brower (West Islip/West Islip) came around to score on a single by Megan Palmatier (Bainbridge/Bainbridge-Guilford) that got by the right fielder allowing Brower to score while moving Palmatier to third base.  Freshman Aysia Oliver (Brentwood/Brentwood) then singled up the middle to score Palmatier with the second run of the inning.  With runners at second and third, senior Kristen Collins (Hicksville/Holy Trinity) beat out a bunt that scored Oliver.

Trailing 3-1 entering the top of the fourth, the Cardinals plated six unearned runs aided by three Oneonta errors.  The big hit of the inning was a one-out double to left center field by Alexa Murray that drove the final two runs of the inning.

In game 2, Plattsburgh scored four runs in the first inning, one run in the second and added six more in the seventh inning for its total.  In the first inning, with the bases loaded, Bella Spadinger hit a single to center field that slipped by allowing the bases to clear.

Oneonta cut its deficit in half with two runs in the home half of the first inning.  Collins got things started with a leadoff double, went to third on a ground out and scored on a sacrifice fly by senior Caroline Koch (New City/Clarkstown South).  The Red Dragons then loaded the bases where a walk to senior Meaghan Raleigh (Endwell/Maine Endwell) brought home Badillo.

Oneonta inched closer with single runs in the third and sixth innings to make the score 5-4 entering the final inning.

A mishandled exchange at second base on a fielder's choice allowed the inning to keep going and, six runs later, Oneonta found themselves behind 11-4.  All six runs were scored with two outs in the inning.  A bases-clearing triple by Kristen Langdon gave the Cardinals a 9-4 advantage.  RBI singles by Rebecca Diller and Spadinger put Plattsburgh at 11 runs.

Oneonta rallied in the bottom of the seventh trying to make Plattsburgh pay for its two errors, but came up short.  Raleigh and freshman Victoria Hussey (Nesconset/Smithtown East) each had a run batted in for the Red Dragons in the inning.

Just the Stats
Plattsburgh collected 21 hits on the day while Oneonta had 19.  Each team had three extra-base hits total.  Both teams were guilty of miscues in the field leading to a combined 15 errors.

Julia Golino went the distance in game 1 for Plattsburgh to pick up her second win of the season while Kristina Maggiacomo threw seven innings to record her fourth win of the season.

Freshman Lauren Weber (Sayville/Sayville) suffered the loss in game 1 for Oneonta while classmate Marissa Dionisio (Sayville/Sayville) took the loss in game 2.  All seven runs in game 1 for Plattsburgh were unearned while nine of the 11 in game 2 were unearned.
